Photographer's Note
Amsterdam is the city of canals (gracht in Dutch) and the city of bridges (brug in Dutch). There are 100 km of canals, but how many bridges? I read about 1500, or maybe 1800, even more. Many of them are movable bridges. The most famous is Skinny Bridge (Magere Brug) on the Amstel river, it is a traditional Dutch double draw bridge, opening on both sides. The bridge is not skinny any more, like the photographer:).
Often the bridge can open but rarely it is done. It happens often in Amsterdam and a good excuse when you are late somewhere is to say: Ah, the bridge was open.
I observed the phases in opening this bridge, it is the moment when the big barge can pass.
I posted a photo of it here. The night view you can see on Gerrit's photo.
The beginning and a bit later .

Witaj MAlgo,
nice the view of this section of the canal, with the barge to passing by under the most famous movable bridge of them.I like the creative perspective with the brilliant light to enhance the details as the clarity of the scene.

Hello Malgo,
You do seem to have amassed quite a collection of movable bridges:-) This is another fine example and well taken by you. Good choice of the panoramic frame for this nicely exposed composition. I like the colours and light and shadow contrasts. The passing barge loaded wit ballast enlivens the scene and provides a good sense of scale.

Howdy Malgo,
Interesting Amsterdam canal scene, with the long barge passing through the double hinge draw bridge, and a background of classical row houses.
Thanks for sharing,
Cheers,
Ray
PS: I have been away from History classes too long, and admittedly goofed by confusing Samuel with Thomas Becket. Way back in 1964 a popular movie starring Richard Burton as Thomas Becket and Peter O'Toole as Henry II, combined history with fiction. The movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and would win one, for Best Screenplay.

Ciao Malgorzata,

Buonanotte

Exquisite canal scenery in Amsterdam, Malgo, you had a best possible daylight in this town - not a usual day, and you taken advantage of this beautifully.
The passing barge gave extra sense of motion to the whole.
Bravo,
Ike

Hi Malgo,
Nce timing to It it open like this, especially if it happens so rarely. You placed the bridge very nicely in context of the city too, the old Dutch buildings n the right add a lot to the image and the sense of where we are when viewing this. Very cool.
Cheers

Hello Malgo,
This time, you caught one in the act. Excellent show-and-tell piece. I like the architecture of the buildings in the background, too.

MT
