This visit during Covid-19 to Sluis In the Netherlands, this is allowed in Belgium at the moment.
My bike ride went past Sluis to the ramparts.
SECOND PICTURE
You can see the old Fortress.
History
The fort was built by the Spanish general Spinola after the capture of Sluis by Prince Maurice in 1604. It was a so-called counterfort and was supposed to protect the area against attacks by the States troops. It was a four-sided bastioned earthen fort. It also controlled shipping (on the Soute Vaart and Soete Vaart) to Bruges.
The fort served again, in favor of the French, during the War of the Spanish Succession. After this war the Barrier tract was established, whereby a number of forts in the Southern Netherlands had to tolerate a State occupation. This happened in 1718. During that period, a horn work and two redoubts were added to the fort. In 1783 the Austrians drove the Staatsen out of the fortresses and the 1664 border was restored.
A large part of the fort disappeared due to the digging of the Damse Vaart in 1856. Remains of it - some of the horn work in the shape of a dovetail - can still be found north of this canal. Today this is part of the Sint-Donaaspolder nature reserve.
I hope you like it

Hi John,
This structure seems to have survived what might have been of attack up through the years!
Fine light, and I like inclusion of the greenery in front for contrast and life...
Best regards

Hello John,
It's interesting to find a 17th century fortress here in this quiet and peaceful countryside. It tells us of the less peaceful past times. The fortress has become a nice part of this composition from a beautiful day in December. We haven't seen any days like this for a long time where I live. Here every day is dark and cloudy and very dull, and they don't inspire to taking photos.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi John,
It is a surprising little fortification. You framed this view well with that paved path leading to left and trees offering some framing. The weather is surprisingly good for December.

Hallo John,
Een mooi, helder winterlicht hier. Het zorgt dat het groene gras en de blauwe lucht mooi uitkomen, zeker ook gecombineerd met de warme tinten van het oude fort. De compositie is uitstekend.

Hallo John,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hello John,
Perfect sharpness and density levels with ideal colour saturation and the road at left adding lead in lines towards the old castle. Tfs!

Hi John,
The trees are framing well the fortress. The point of view is showing the details of the fortress. The light is giving good colors rendering. Have a nice day.

Hi John
Now we have a clearer view of the medieval fortress in such a peaceful location. The shooting angle offers the necessary depth and love how the path leads the eyes travel into the distant. Pin sharp with fine clarity, lighting and glorious colors. Wonderful capture

Hello John,
This is the day that you had lovely winter sunshine, too. The light is really beautiful, making the scene seem to glow.
You have a strong lead line to the strongly positioned fort, which looks strangely geometric in this environment which is so gentle and flowing.
The winter trees make a good feature, tall and willowy in the f/g and then guiding, in a leafless line, right into the b/g.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hello John,
:-) your bike ride to Holland with no border.
What a beautiful old Fortress scene turning into nature reserve for the wildlife where I can see a few geese , enjoying the green pastures and the fresh water around the fort.
You've such a wonderful weather to be on the road with your bike. The naked trees bathing in the warm sunshine and the clear blue sky ( everybody wishing for ).
We've lockdown over here but I sure this won't stop you from crossing the border :-)
Tfs, Loong

Hi John,
it is indeed often the case that people travel around the world but don't know the treasures in their own country. But it is easy to fix :)
Great light here which makes everything look attractive.
Pleasant level of contrast and well saturated colors.
Well used motif of the read and a fragment of the fortress adding some interest.
Very well seen and captured,
M

Dag John
The small path acts as a nice lead-in toward the historic building determined to stay by the road and the tiny river as a photographic opportunity to photographers for such nice captures, as yours!.

Hi John.
A beautiful rural landscape with these large lines of trees, on the right a flat green, the remains of the fort are a singularity, and the road seems good to walk.
Magnificent composition and color.
Excellent brightness and sharpness.
Well done. I love the picture.
Have a good week.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Dear John,
A nice portrayal of this fortress from a wider-perspective. The road helps my view towards the fortress, which is bigger than I expected from your previous photo.
Thank you for sharing it!
Best Wishes,
Gy.
