The mirror of Rijpwetering, a photo from Zuid Holland, South

Photographer's Note

Last weekend + first two days of this week we in Holland (and in much of the Western Europe as well) had quite an exceptional weather, a real spring with the temperatures around +15C. Morning light was especially wonderful, I took this opportunity to make small photo-detours on my way to work to some typical old Dutch villages near Leiden. Here we are in one of them, Rijpwetering, and see the neogothic church built in 1860 reflected in the canal. Not much to add really, a typical Dutch village scene but I can assure you that starting from yesterday it all looks completely different as we are back to the typical Dutch winter weather with thick fog covering everything...

Interestingly, several bridges you see here in the perspective are all private bridges, belonging to the houses to which they lead from the main road across the canal, this is also very typical for canalside Dutch villages.

Heeeey Aleksi,

I see we´re both into symmetry reflections today, what a coincidence! This looks like a beautiful place, and the reflection is also great, it has a very calm atmosphere and the circular polarizer was used as it should in such cases...listen, I will visit Amsterdam during the Easter for several days, do you know what kind of weather there is at the end of March?

Hello Alexander,
a very eyecatching shot with the refelctions on the placid water playing the role of the main character. The great exposure did allow you to deliver a well balanced compo in terms of colours, very naturals and soft. Quality is excellent throughout with well visible details.

Indeed such a weather must be a rarity in the world of Dutch winters... but for the photo it works ebst allowing such views with symetry in the reflection, and given the abundance of waterways around you certainly don't lack such PoVs, just the time to tour them all I guess ;-)

Hi Alexander,
So much of the winter then, what comes to Central Europe. Here in Tampere it seems that it has just started. After weeks - or with a few exceptions months - of cloudy weather and around 0 temperatures, it's finally sunny and frosty here.
Narrow canals often seem to have still waters that offer beautiful reflections on sunny weather. Neutral filter on upper half could give more even exposure for the sky and water.

As always the reflected sky has a more rich colour than the original, probably some sort of polarizing effect...

This is a great with a reflection that creates nice balance and symmetry. The lighting and colors are great with outstanding sharpness and DOF.

Excellent picture, Alexander.
You make the ultimate dutch images, even more than Jaap, who is the master of the dutch landscape here, but shows them like Ruysdael paintings.
The iron bridges and the Catholic Church of Cuypers (the most important architect for the dutch villages and small cities). A very typical and high quality image in great dutch light.
