Brocken spectre, Tatra Mountains

This is a photo of the phenomenon known as the Brocken spectre. Named after a German who first identified (recorded) it. The spectre is actually formed when your shadow is cast onto a layer of mist lying below you. So it is very rare to see one. I have been lucky enough to see it on several occasions in the mountains.

Sensation photo, Piotr. I hope it gets the attention it deserves. In the pre-digital age, I was visiting the key Observatory at the top of 4200 m Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Because of the danger to the telescopes from headlights, it is necessary to vacate the place before sunset. I could see the shadow of the mountain in the air, but the sheer disparity in scale made it impossible to see myself. could this have been an instance of Brocken Spectra?

Widziałeś widmo Brockenu kilka razy? To dobrze, bo podobno jak sie widzi raz, to czeka śmierś w górach, ale jak sie juz zobaczy trzy razy, to bedzie w porządku. Ale to podobno tylko wymyslona legenda. Niesamowite zjawisko, nigdy tego nie widziałam. Podobno nawet jak jest kilka osób każdy idzi tylko własny cień. Fantastuczne światło.
Nazwa pochodzi od szczytu w gorach Harzu.

Bonjour Piotr,

J'aime beaucoup cette ligne diagonale qui sépare l'image en deux. J'aime ce soleil à contre jours qui offre un très beau halo lumineux dans cette couche de brouillard.

Luckily you had the clouds as a filter to the camera, looking directly at the sun.
The slope provide a nice partition on pic. space, some lit patchs made a nice contrast.

Une bonne lecture de cette image avec cette pente qui nous fait parcourir ce relief.Ici le ciel joue avec ce soleil et les lueurs ainsi engendrées créent des teintes délicates bien rendues dans ce cliché.Quelques passages de lumière sur ce relief donnet une bonne touche à cette image.

Very good and original composition, I like those diagonals of the slope in the plane as well as the cloudy sky, with this spectrum created by the sun in the clouds, a catch just in time.

Czesc,
nietypowe zjawisko fajnie uchwyciles. Ciekawe rozszczepienie bialego swiatla na teczowe barwy. Nie mialem okazji na cos takiego trafic z wyjatkiem blikow o podobnym spektrum ale punktowo.

Many Chinese people would love this. They even consider leaping off mountains like Emei Shan, into the rainbow cloud, although that would be a bit difficult here! The tilt adds dynamism and I like the patch of sunlight on the tussock grass at left. Tfs!
