Photographer's Note

In 1582, two years after Portugal lost independence the first time, following the mad adventure of King Sebastian to the moroccan desert, São Miguel was the last piece of Portugal not occupied by Spanish forces.

In front of Vila Franca do Campo, the spanish fleet, that at that time controlled the oceans of the world, slaughtered the last portuguese resisters lead by D. António Prior do Crato.
