Photographer's Note

The fishermen's chapel in Camara de Lobos was historically where the wives of fishermen would come and pray for their husbands while they were out on the dangerous waters. The interior is decorated with the life of Saint Anthony and his exploits while at sea.

Originating in 1420, by order of João Gonçalves Zarco the Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Pescadores (Our Lady of Fishermen) was built by the port. In 1723, the small chapel in baroque style was completely remodelled, retaining the tower´s original style.

I don't know the cultural history of this place, but in Eastern Canada, its widely known that houses and buildings are brightly painted bc they use the left over paint used to paint boats. So i wonder if these bright colours are the result of the same idea, using leftover paint from the boats.

lots of vivid colours going on here, ample lighting, and the mood is set from the sombre story of wives wishing/praying for the safety of their husbands. fine post
