Photographer's Note
Picture taken at Ruins of the Convento do Carmo in downtown Lisbon which was almost completely destroyed when a strong earthquake hit Portugal in the morning of November 1st, 1755. Today, the ruins of the Covent are a national monument and the home of the Carmo Archaeological Museum.
NOVEMBER 1ST, 1755. ALL SAINTS DAY
The earthquake began at 9:20 and was centered in the Atlantic Ocean, about 200 km WSW of Cape St. Vincent. The total duration of shaking lasted ten minutes. Effects from the earthquake were far reaching. Most of the damage occurred in the south-west of Portugal and Lisbon, the Portuguese capital, was the most important of the cities damaged.
A devastating fire followed the earthquake and destroyed all of the downtown Lisbon, from St. Roque to Carmo and Trindade, from the Rossio square area to the Castle and Alfama quarters. Bairro Alto and Alfama quarters were partially burned. The flames raged for five days.
Immediately after the earthquake, many of the Lisbon residents looked for safety on the sea by boarding the ships moored on the river Tejo. But, 30 minutes after the quake, a large wave swamped the area near Bugio Tower on the mouth of the Tejo. The area in the western part of the city was the most heavily damaged by the wave, but further destruction occurred upstream. The Cais das Colunas at Terreiro do Paço and parts of the nearby custom house were flattened. A total of three waves struck the shore, each dragging people and debris out to sea and leaving exposed large stretches of the river bottom. In front of the Terreiro do Paço, the maximum height of the waves was estimated at 6 meters. Boats overcrowded with refugees capsized and sank.
It is estimated that 60,000 and 100,000 people perished during the quake, fire and tsunami.

Boas António,
very good angle, composotion, nice idea to have it B&W gives us the feeling of going back in time to the 16th century.
also I must praise you for giving us a bit of the history behind each picture you take, not many of us have this talent.
Um abraço amigo,
Nelson

Cumprimentos, Anabela

A good composition with the series of receding arches leading through the frame.
The highlights on the stonework are a little over-exposed, and this is emphasised by your contrasty B&W conversion.
I don't think it matters too much though, good work.
Cheers,
Ben

Bom dia Antonio,

Miguel.

Hi Antonio! The B&W choice is very appropriate for this shot! Your notes are very informative, gives us an idea on what happened before. The sharpness is excellent; IMHO, the lighting is a little bit bright, a little darkening might help. Overall, a very nice composition! rgds.

A very nicely composed and satisfying picture,Antonio. I have not visited this site, but I remember so well the relics of the earthquake, still evident in this lovely city. Black and white is most suitable for this picture, which is a fine record. regards Kevin

Buena foto.
Un saludo,
Josep

Hi Antonio,
wonderful composition... of this decomposed convent. Yes one time the masters really know how to build... look at the main arches that have carred the roof, even now after 360 years, are in perfect conditions. I like your shot from this POV.
Have a nice day,
Tomi

Interesting note, in this case you use words like Tsunami, we diid not about this word until few years ago, however this is the tigth word to explain what happens, thank you for you explanation and for tell us more about this eartquake, so famous.
About the picture the B&W makes this picture latter to read the note more interesting and the archs, windos, and the ligth trow this windows makes this picture more dramtic but a t the same time more beauty, give sa strange mixt of dramatism, beauty antiquec to this picture.
Well done Antonio

Hi Antonio
a very clear contrasted and sharp detailled well framed shot of the arcs in converging perspective to the corner of this ruins to remind the earthquake.
Excellent appropriate turn to B&W here.

A nota é excelente.

Hi Antonio - nice pov, the repeating arches look quite pleasant, some parts appear a little overexposed because of the difficult light contrasts, but still very nice ooutcome.

Shall I say: Frilled composition?
Flawlessly executed photograph.
Those details...those palettes of grays.
Impossible to pass it, once you've spotted.
Technicality, man.
It's all about technicality.

Hi Antonio,
Very impressive b/w picture! These arches gives a great graphical power. I like this sky darker than the ruins...It gives a nice effect. I tried some b/w pictures in industrial places and this is the result I would be acheaving...
