Photographer's Note

Too good to be true? No, this is Lisbon in the 21st century! If you are for a “proper” shave, this barber has his shop in Rua 1° de Dezembro which is the first street on the west side of the Rossio Place, downtown Lisbon. This is an example how good things can not be replaced by technology. For how long? I do not have an answer.

Estou a ver que ainda arranjas umas bem boas nos teus arquivos, António. Esta está excelente pela perspectiva e jogo de espelhos. Sempre adorei a multiplicação de imagens em sítios destes, poder ver a parte de trás da minha cabeça, mesmo à minha frente. Estes sítios sempre foram os meus preferidos, mas estão mesmo a desaparecer...depois de fecharem as minhas duas alternativas em Oeiras, desisti e rendi-me aos modernaços. Bem que estou a precisar de um serviço destes, pois deu-me a loucura e estou com uma grande barba ;-)

Great composition here Antonio, I like how we can see the barber three times and there's lot's of other details to enjoy, such as the man waiting his turn in the background.
It might just be that they weren't visible in the reflection, but it looks like although the customer is wearing glasses in the foreground, his reflection is not wearing glasses. Very strange. Might just be my eyesight, maybe I need glasses!
This is a great shot though, well done.

Olá António. É mesmo o tipo de cena que gosto de ver em fotografia, e a simetria está um sucesso. Até o senhor que fecha a imagem em cima à direita ficou perfeito. Gosto também da escolha do preto e branco que ajuda realmente a recuar no tempo, apesar dos ténis do jovem traírem de certa forma a nossa época...

Ora aqui está um tema fascinante para fotografar, seja pelo imaginário que está ligado às barbearias, seja pelo pitoresco, seja pelos jogos de reflexos das paredes espelhadas. Mas está longe de ser fácil de obter fotos realmente boas, como é o caso desta, pois a profusão de detalhes e a pouca luz quase sempre estraga tudo, além de que fotografar pessoas é sempre complicado.

Wonderful picture, Antonio. I like it very much. Now people don't have much time to go to barber shop... but it's very relaxing thing. Small talk with the barber, some funny coment or conversation with somebody that you even don't know... Nice place. I'm courious how many barbers are still in Sevilia.

remarkable how old this looks. Its also remarkable that these barbers still exist, and that they havent been pushed out by those beauty salons with their chic interiors and overpriced haircuts. Great choice for b/w. The double reflection is fantastic.

haces una buena publicidad de esta barbería y de su barbero, con esta escena muy natural y espontánea de su trabajo cotidiano.
El juego que has creado con las imágenes reflejadas en los espejos es muy bueno y divertido, y además nos haces trabajar la vista buscándote entre ellos. No he conseguido localizar al fotógrafo.

Hello Antonio.
Quite right about some things not being better than there less technological counterparts. Some say Vinyl is better than cd's...some say film is better than digital...some say candles are better than bulbs...well, I won't wade into the fray.
What i can say is you've captured a great shot. The repetition of the barber and client is excellent. Great sharpness and super use of the wide DOF. This phot has alot of punch.

Hi Antonio - I agree, the old style barber shops have a special charm, the BW enhanves the antique atmosphere (I even see an ashtray) of something that is obviously a slice of modern daily life.

A real barber. Love this manly intimacy. The foam, the face of the barber, the pleasure he seems to take in his craft of old. A lovely moment taken, Antonio. Though I hope I never have to go to a barber, haha, I would go and see this man once in Lisboa, to take a shot of him myself. Am sure he wouldn't start screaming at me! :-)))
I should post a shot of a barber here... his eyes glared at me when I came close with my camera. Nothing like this gentle one!

Excelente foto esta com uma visão que felizmente alguns dos nossos barbeiros 'teimam' em manter resistindo contra os 'cabeleireiros de shopping' que vão aparecendo como cogumelos um pouco por todo o lado.
Eu mesmo 'teimo' em continuar a frequentar o 'meu' barbeiro de há muitos anos sempre que vou visitar os meus pais ao Porto, aproveitando para cortar o cabelo.
Gosto muito da forma como compuseste a foto com o barbeiro em acção e os reflexo da cena no espelho. O P&B que escolheste cria uma atmosfera de certa 'antiguidade'.

I pretty had the same treatment at an old but very belegant barebers off the Rossio in Lisboa a few years back, even ended up having a manicure in some corner. Halfway through some guy came in off the street selling fresh cheeses! Love your POV here, the way you set up the shot and the reflection to the left - very "Pro" job.

Great photo (and barber series too). I like the feeling of the 30's given by thos B&W photo, eben if itùs a 21st cebtury pic. The composition seems perfect, good diagonal balance with the mirror as a secondary center of interest. I love it!
