Photographer's Note
A classical shot from a Lisbon tourist magnet ;)
This picture was taken at my last visit to this great city. Lisbon is a wonderfull place to visit for any photograper! I am so much looking forward to return in July :-)
Built for the New Company of the Ascensores Mechanical of Lisbon to connect the Street of São Paulo to the Plaza of the Calhariz, the Elevator da Bica was inaugurated with pomp on 28th of June of 1892. Technically it is a cable-car on a 800 mm rail, the cable being integrated in the street's middle fence that looks like a rail. The orginal system of traction used water counterbalance to pull the cable, but the frequent lacks in the water supply made that the initial system was quickly ambandonned for a steam engine. The elevator was finally electrified in 1927 and passed to the ownership of Carris.

Wow this is an interesting shot Mike. Lots to look at. I really like your choice of B&W here it looks fabulous to me. Maybe I would have gotten the whole of the young lady on the right into the shot. Never mind it is still great in my opinion.
Cheers,
Debbie

Very good Classic BW Photo of Lisbon.
If it wasn´t the car on the background and young lady with modern boots, this photo could have been taken 30 years ago.
Well Done

Hello Mike,
very good choise of b&w for this image. The narrow street looks very crowded with all the details but I guess this is exactly the ingredient for a charming athmosphere. It seems a bit out of perspective due to the downstreets low contrast.
I must agree with you, Lisbon is one of best places to visit in Europe.
Thank you for sharing,
Laura

Bonjour Mike
superbe plan que tu nous proposes ici. la focale choisie, l'angle, la composition avec ces personnes qui occupent la voie et ton passage au noir et blanc sont une vrai plaisir. le resultat est superbe et terriblement authentique

Mike, I've seen many photos of this same location but yours is as good as any. The walking people are positioned diagonally, which makes the compo special. Perfectly framed, nothing redundant. Also a good idea to have it in B&W. Very well done. Regards,
Hakan

Bonsoir Mike ,
Beau travail.
Salutations amicales.

Mike: like the 'cacaphony' of details here - lending an impression of a very strong and sharp shot. Your unwitting pedestrians form a perfect diagonal too - another strong element in this, one of your better shots on page one. regards, c

Hi Mike,
It's a classisal shot as you said but this compositon in B&W it's very nice. It seems an old portrait.
I like it very much.
Great POV and perspective.
