Photographer's Note

Thru the years I posted quite few pictures of the Sotavento, but never an aerial one. This one showcases the main ingredients: the salinas (salt pans), lagoons, barrier islands and dunes of the Ria Formosa coastal nature reserve which covers all of the Sotavento coast.

And there’s the charming town of Fuzeta too, a thriving fishing village. In some aspects the Sotavento coastal landscape can be compared with the Dutch 'wadden' & 'waddeneilanden'.

The pic was shot while our Transavia Boeing 737-800 (NG) was banking on its spectacular approach to Faro. I remember that we were in a curiously twin-liveried plane, that was part of the fleet Transavia shares with GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes from Brasil. Upon boarding the plane in Rotterdam, we joked that it just might bring us to Porto Seguro (Bahia) – a GOL jet once brought us there (and back to São Paulo).

Hello Bert,
It's fascinating to watch the dunes, reefs, buildings and other details from this height, not to mention the spectacular colours. This is a photo you could enlarge, print and frame and hang it on the wall. It's just as good as a painting.

Hello Bert, you managed a very good sharp composition from the plane as it approached the airport.
The colours and patterns are very attractive.
It could almost be seen as an abstract picture.

Dag Bert,

Ik ben er zeker van dat de Wadden in Nederland mooier zijn, zeker in de zomer periode, maar dan met laagwater, en de zeehonden samen.
Maar u was iets verder van huis.
Dus vanuit het vliegtuig dit beeld maken is niet gemakkelijk.
Het was nog iets te hoog, maar de vleigtuigen vliegen niet op commando van een passagier nietwaar!
Maar het komt er behoorlijk uit, bedankt.

Hallo Bert, you captured a splendid aerial panorama from the plane. The rio Formosa mouth appears from the air. The area is made of sandbars, fresh and sea water, lagoons and a town. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

What a fine aerial view you have shared, here!
The diagonal composition is excellent and emphasises the amazing colours that can be seen either side of the dunes.
The sea appears to be swirling, despite the still nature of the photograph.

Hello Bert, interesting note about your flights. I always try to have the seat near the window to take some pictures, but rarely I succeed. Here the view is fantastic - sharp, interesting shapes and wonderful colours of shallow water.

I wouldn't guess, just by looking at the lovely colour palette that this image was taken from an airplane window. Great aerial shot, almost abstract, with wonderful shapes and patterns.

Hallo Bert,
Een prachtig gezicht op de wadden- en lagunekust van de Algarve. Het verschil tussen dit oostelijke deel en het rots- en kliffendeel in het westen is opvallend. Heel mooi gezicht van de verschillende groene en blauwe tinten van het water samen met het stadje in de hoek.
