Lost in Time, a photo from Guarda, North

Photographer's Note

Since I have been taught some techniques on how to convert to B&W (sepia in this case), I keep experimenting and trying again and again. But to be able to progress and need to show what I have done so far and get exposed to your critiques. This is one of my recent essays and I hope it is not very bad. By the way, I am posting it because I like it. Thanks for your critiques and suggestions. In WS is the colour version.

Sortelha is a medieval village and one of the oldest in Portugal. The construction of the fortified walls is ascribed to D. Sancho I, King of Portugal between 1185 and 1211. After that, D. Sancho II ordered the construction of the castle and chartered Sortelha in 1228. Over the centuries, the defensive structure of the village was repaired by other Portuguese Kings such as D.Diniz, D. Fernando and D. Manuel I, who erected the “Pelourinho” in 1510. The castle was again repaired in 1640 when the Restoration War and gained a status of National Monument in 1910.

This shot was taken on a cold day last January, late in the afternoon and before sunset set.

Hi Antonio,
Interesting POV.Gives an olden days feeling to me.But I do feel rather than Sepia the B/W would have been a better option.

Interessante, a perspectiva. O céu aparece como complemento natural aos telhados e às muralhas. Parece que o único elemento humano são as duas silhuetas lá ao fundo, o que dá a sensação que não deve haver muita gente por aqui...

É uma foto bastante interessante pois a cor faz-nos pensar sobre o passado desta aldeia e das sua gentes, para mais, o muro da muralha que se encontra a esquerda faz pensar sobre misterios que possam estar guardados nestas pedras.
Quanto a composição parece-me bastante agradável e adoro o pormenor das duas silhuetas no horizonte.

Resulting colours and tones are superb. IMO only diturbing detail is the overexposed sky, but not very important.

Excelente o PP dado a esta foto e criando uma ambiancia bem bonita.
Sortelha é um daqueles locais onde há uns anos atrás se gastariam uns quantos rolos a fotografar cada recanto deste encantador local. Gosto muito de ver todos estes telhados e a arquitectura tao tipica destas casinhas.

Le traitement que tu as choisi est interressant car il donne une unité aux toits que l'on ne retrouve pas dans le ws. Cela contribue à créer l'atmosphère de cette photo.

Moody realisation,more so than the color one,so your conversion is succesful.
My personnal taste is not for sepia as such,it is pleasnt here but wonder if B&W will not have been more effective.

I'm stopping by because the picture with its composition and sepia tones is quite attractive. The dark sky and the light at the horizon are excellent and gives an interesting mood. You couldn't find a better title for this post.

Hi Antonio. Interesting capture. Maybe it’s just my monitor but some of the window frames seem white while the rest of the pic is sepia. Good composition and interesting POV. Thanks for sharing.

Je préfère celle-ci, en sepia elle lui donne un cachet rétro comme si on remontait le temps,la muraille semble arreter les nuages menaçant.

I am noticing a stark difference in your style of photography these days and the change is for the better. I like your recent experiments with different forms of B&W (Sepia in this case). Excellent tones almost gives a golden hue. I would go with the post rather then the original in the WS.

Já estava com saudades das tuas fotos António. Estou a ver que os furos estão a deixar-te com pouco tempo livre para a fotografia... Bom, desta vez tenho que ser mauzinho e dizer-te que a qualidade deste jpg está terrível. Não estou a falar da imagem em si, mas sim da qualidade do ficheiro. Está cheio de pixelização, não sei se da demasiada compressão do jpg, se da fraca qualidade da Sony, mas está muito mão. E aqui neste sépia ainda se nota mais. Quanto à imagem em si, prefiro a versão a cor. Aqui há muito confusão, os telhados ficaram mais claros que as casas (opção por teres usado o 'filtro' vermelho) e não há um sítio claro para onde olhar. Depois há aquele clarão de luz branca no topo esquerdo que no sépia não gosto de ver. Devia ser creme clarinho e não branco. A versão a cores é mais bonita, os telhados vermelhos seguram o olhar e aquela relva verde do lado direito fica muito bem. A qualidade do jpg continua mau e isso, sinceramente, estraga um pouco a avaliação que possamos fazer dela. Para o ano em Setembro, quando lá voltares com a 30D e uma bagagem de novo folego fotográfico vais olhar para esta e pensar: "realmente, esta não era lá assim grande foto!" ;) Abraço

Hi Antonio,
This is a very difficult image for me my friend, i do not really know what to say about it. I am not a big fan of Sepia landscapes. In a way they all look the same and i think Sepia is not made for that, but that's stricktly personal.
Seeing the WS i was wondering why not post that one, that one looks really great, complete my style and i like that one a lot..!!!
I understand your reason to change it to Sepia, trying to explore alle the features modern photo editors bring you to see how it looks in different tonings and your doing very well on that part, but this picture does not that much to me in Sepia, but i love the colour version.

I've never really been a fan of sepia toning, but I do think it works well in this case.
You framed the view over the rooftops very well, and the dark sky has given this real atmosphere.
It's a nice, contrasty black and white conversion, and while I do like the sepia, it would be interesting to see how it would look as a straight black and white image.

Hello Antonio, a very nice sepia, quite different in tonality from mine in general, but i think yours is more to what sepia really is, with this golden hue that gives a timeless dymension to this lovely shot. The title is very good too, expresses the feel of this extremely old and beautiful village on a (ah!) January day! If only I could be in such a place in January! :)

Bonita foto com um título mais do que apropriado!
Acho que a tua opção pelos tons sépia foi fundamental para reforçar a ideia ja patente no cenário real: a tal ideia duma realidade perdida no tempo. Pergunto-me se ao fundo, o que se avista, se são duas pessoas observando o cenário... se forem, ainda mais enriquece este momento de fotografia, pois também elas pela sua postura parecem estupefactas com o cenario. Também o ponto de vista foi bem escolhido.

I am in a quandry regarding this post of yours...I love the colour WS where the dramatic clouds & the patch of blue sky contrast superbly with the red tiled houses. Coverting to sepia loses this, but at the same time gives a timeless feel that perhaps you want to show. The conversion has been done excellently. Congratulations on experimenting & providing us food for thought and commenting.

Je pense que l'impact est plus fort avec ce ton sépia. Ah ! que j'aime ce genre d'image et surtout ce qu'elle représente. Une ville chargée d'histoire. Comme je voudrais, par je ne sais quel coup de baguette magique me transporter dans cette ville et découvrir ces trésors architecturaux.

Wow you make and exelent work with your sepia, this is IMPRESSIVE.

I think the Sepia tones add a lot to this picture which seems to be be out from a forgotten coffer dating from the 19th century. I appreciate these roofs and the sky which is rendered so well.

I loie the sepia..apocalyptic looking sepia! The old place has this unreal feel to it with this toning. And I cant help but love something that is so small here: the people on the wall in the back. Or ghosts?:)

Hello Antonio. Both versions are quite good. You have given me something to think about here. I am in the bad habit of only considering B&W conversions when the shot does not look good in color. So perhaps I should experiment like you here and try to break out of that mold. So thanks for sharing 2 very good but different renditions.

A strange thing about the B&W is how some of the windows really stand out and almost seem silver colored.

sorry if my comment can be the same as one of the previous, but usually I avoid to read them in advance.
I must say that the effect of Sepia in this case has produced a "cartoon effect", in the sense that it is hard to distinguish your shot from a hand-made drawing. Strange, original, far from usual TE jobs. Dario

Quem sou eu para fazer críticas técnicas. Acho que o Luís Afonso deu umas boas explicações sobre esta imagem (e o WS).
O que eu achei (sem capacidade de grande análise técnica e antes de ler o Luís) é que me parece que a imagem está demasiado clara, talvez por causa dos telhados. Além disso algumas janelas parecem estar a cizento (ou P&B puro), o que é estranho, já que o resto é sépia.

Isto tudo é bom para irmos aprendendo (principalmente pessoas como eu, que não sei quase nada).

Quanto à vista da aldeia (nomeadamente na versão a cores), está espectacular.

and what a delicious "dish" this is - your "experimenting" with sepia is really interesting, and the final result, out-of-this-time is just great,
i wonder - people living in such places, surrounded by the hundred years old walls, twhat do they feel? do they think they have inherited a load of luck to be there or do they just think that it is nothing extraordinary?

Acho interessante o trabalho feito aqui, a escolha de sepia não é fácil. Mas encontro aqui um trabalho diferente... gosto particularmente do resultado que o efeito produziu nos telhados... remete-nos para uma ambiguidade.

Olá António, tal como na última que publicaste, dá para notar o ruído nalguns sítios, em minha opinião, mais na versão a cores que nesta. Não sei do que é, porque também não percebo nada disto, mas ao contrário do Luís, acho que esta resulta melhor. O ruído parece mais grão o que até joga bem com o aspecto antigo que se propõe desta vila perdida. E eu normalmente até sou mais pelas cores...A perspectiva é fantástica e adoro ver as duas pessoas lá atrás a caminhar na muralha. A qualidade para mim, não é de todo o mais importante no TE e talvez por isso não esteja a evoluir muito nesse campo. Gosto desta.

De superbes contrastes dans les lumières ce qui donne pas mal d'effet de relief.
