Photographer's Note

1128-1139 - Independence of Portugal. D. Afonso Henriques proclaim the independent Kingdom of Portugal and became its first king. The following centuries there are several battles and wars between Portugal and Castile/Spain, as the Spaniards always wanted to incorporate Portugal in their realm.
1580 - 1640 - Spanish domination. King Philip II of Spain achieved the incorporation of Portugal within the Spanish domains.
1640 - Restoration of Independence, December 1st. The 60-year dynastic union of Portugal and Spain is finished. Portugal became independent again. More wars against the Spaniards, who want to recover their domination over Portugal.
1709 - The Spaniards destroy the Bridge of Ajuda (Ponte de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda; this photo), between the Portuguese frontier towns of Elvas and Olivenza (Olivença).
1801 - 1807 - Spain invades Portugal and occupies Olivenza (Olivença). It was the last war between Spain and Portugal. The Spaniards keep Olivenza (Olivença) by means of the Treaty of Badajoz, but according to the Treaty of Vienna (1815), Portugal never recognized Spain's occupation of Olivenza (Olivença); de jure, it may be regarded as a Portuguese territory.
1986 - Portugal and Spain become members of the European Union. Over the years, the borders between the E.U. members became virtually null and meaningless, but Portugal officially still claims the legal rights to Olivenza (Olivença).
2000 - A new Bridge of Ajuda was built nearby, downstream. It was undertaken by the Portuguese only, as Portugal could not accept an international bridge in a place where there is no agreement on the border limit.

This photo shows the ruins of the Bridge of Ajuda (Ponte de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda), that was built by the Portuguese king D. Manuel in 1509. It had 19 archs and a lenght of 450 m (1476 ft) across the Guadiana river, on the route between the Portuguese towns of Elvas and Olivenza (Olivença).

About the location. This brigde was in the former municipality (concelho) of Juromenha (also known as Nossa Senhora do Loreto). In 1836 this concelho was incorporated in that of Alandroal and Juromenha became a parish (freguesia). This is most of the photo. On the other side of the river was the village of Vila Real, which was part of the concelho of Juromenha. Under Spanish administration, Vila Real (Villa Real) was incorporated in the ayuntamiento of Olivenza (Olivença).

Today, December 1 st, Portugal celebrates the Restoration of Independence. It's a national holiday, but the Day of Portugal it's June 10 th.

Ola Francisco,
The clouds are wonderful, the graceful olive tree provides nice balance for the ancient ruins of the bridge; the WS photos validate the excellence of this framing choice. I prefere the more natural colors in your version.
Your note is full of interesting detail.

Happy Independence Day!! My Mom was born on July 4, the US Independence Day, she's always loved having this exhuberant holiday for a birthday. Now I find that my birthday (December 2) was almost on your idependence day.

What does the Day of Portugal celebrate?

A very original title and a very good photo.
Usually in landscape photography you need to have something in the foreground, something in the middle and a good looking background to make the photo work. You have just that: the tree on the left, the ruined bridge and the hill.
To top it all up - very nice clouds in the sky.

Hi Francisco,
A beautiful landscape with a lovely wide angle.Nicely composed with the tree in FG at left and good balanced content.I like the flowing water and the ruins of the bridge and the different shades of green are very attractive.A touch bright as "Cato" said...TFS and take care.

Olá Francisco, mas que apresentação e nota tão interessantes, incluindo a originalidade do título, que me fez rir. Também gosto bastante do "crop" do Doron. A imagem dele está apelativa, embora com cores saturadas de mais. A tua está de facto muito mais natural.

Vaya foto y guia cronologica , los españoles no salimos muy bien de ella (real y lamentablemente la historia de los pueblos esta vmarcada con sangre , luchas intestinas , odio , pero siempre hay segundas , terceras , cuartas oportunidades para enmendar disputas y desacuerdos historicos ) A mi me gusta Portugal y realmente me da igual que Olivenza sea lusitana , castellana , galaica o marroqui .

A los niños holandeses sus abuelos aun los asustan con las historias del duque de Alba como pretexto para que vayan a dormir 8si no vas a la cama vendra el duque de alba ...) y a los que fueron niños en la España de los 50 , 60 se les hacía lo mismo con los temibles franceses . Hoy en Francia te encuentras un planeta tecnicolor , como en cualquier barecito de desayunos por la plaza de la Figueira o en los karaokes de al lado del Tajo , y eso me gusta mucho :)

Aplicas algo de postprocesado a las fotos ? no se que pasa con los colores , su textura parece mas definida , fria o quizas sea mi pantalla

Olá Francisco,

É uma vista e compo magnífica, com as linhas do terreno da frente e o rio na diagonal a dar imensa profundidade e a destacarem a oliveira da esquerda, de alguma forma equilibrando o lado direito da ponte. O céu, a luz radiosa e os campos verdes tb ajudam.

Provavelmente é uma questão de gosto, mas parece-me que ganhava com um bocadinho mais de saturação: está algo pálida, excepto o céu. Parece-me tb. que tem um ligeiro excesso de azul e/ou magenta, o que a faz parecer ainda mais pálida.

O WS do Doron é o mais vistoso e embora imagine que o realismo tenha sido sacrificado, isso não me choca. O do Limaz tb me agrada, embora ele não tenha eliminado a dominante azul.

Gosto dos teus WS's, principalmente do #2, que tem um POV estupendo. O #1 sofre por estar tão centrado.

Como sempre, uma nota muito informativa e bem escrita (quem me dera conseguir ser tão sintético e dizer tanto com tão poucas palavras). Só um reparo de somenos importância: tanto quanto sei, Portugal nunca foi oficialmente incorporado na Espanha, apenas teve reis que tb reinavam em Espanha.

Esta tua foto é estupenda. Nitidez impecável, efeito de profundidade resvalando às 3D, com um marco histórico cuidadosamente mantido em ruínas (imagino).
Uai, no Brasil, nunca houve repercussão desta perda de autonomia de Portugal, nunca estivemos sob a tutela da Espanha ;-) E, pelas datas, Cabral e sua frota já haviam estabelecido a presença lusitana lá, alguns anos antes desta "dominação"... a política para as colônias era outra, provavelmente.
Muito instrutiva, a tua nota.

Triste esta toamada, Francisco!!
Em Espanha, salvo Extremadura, não sabemos realmente de Olivença. Em Portugal o caso parece mais importante que todas Angloas, Macaos, Mosambiques, Goas e Brasil juntas.
Duas opiniões opostas, uma exagerada, outra míope!!!
Hoje sem fronteiras reais e o control de eles, é bom momento para terminar o caso para sempre!!!

gostei da foito, mostra bem a extensão da ponte, esteticamente falando ficaria ainda mais bonita mostrando apenas a parte ainda em pé do lado de lá do rio e o pilar isolado. boa luz, nitidez e enquadramento. gostei muito de ler a nota. lendo a história de ptgl há dezenas de episódios como este, de humilhação diante de nações mais poderosas, parece que todas elas tiveram direito a dar uma pisadinha no orgulho lusitano.
