A Taberneira, a photo from Coimbra, North

Photographer's Note

Today, I would like to propose a pause in the Myanmar series for a quick return to Coimbra.

Coimbra is a beautiful city in central Portugal, home of the oldest university of the country, founded in 1290, and one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in Europe and the World.

The picture was taken at a place which is not any of the university class rooms or labs. It is one of the last taverns still open in the old quarters of Coimbra, near the Almedina gate, and I am sure it is known to many doctors, engineers or lawyers who drowned in wine many philosophical uncertainties while attending the university for a quite number of years.

I hope you will enjoy the picture as much as I did when I spent a few minutes talking to the lady and took her on photo.

Hello Antonio,
Although taken only three years ago it looks so much older, not only because of the B&W but mainly because of the furniture and maybe because of the older woman as well.
A very well composed image with the atmosphere of a time long ago. Well done!

A foto tem todos os ingredientes de um belo retrato do dia-a-dia de há uns cem anos, excepto os aparelhos eléctricos.
Só não gosto dessa espécie de barra à direita. Experimentei um workshop, com a única solução possível: um corte "à bruta", ficando a foto em formato quadrado.

Muito interessante a escolha do B&W para esta foto da taberna, dá-lhe um aspecto mais antigo, excelente escolha.
A cara da taberneira, parece de poucos amigos...ou talvez não, cansada do trabalho por essas bandas.
Excelente composição como sempre, assunto muito engraçado.

Even without the lady this would have been an interesting shot, with a wealth of interesting detail to explore, but she certainly completes the image, and this wouldn't have been as good without her.
I like how you composed this face-on to the wall; it gives the image a pleasing geometry.
The only thing I don't like is the yellowish toning you gave it. I would have preferred straight black and white, but that's just my taste.

A very nice daily life image. What a strange looking tavern, if you had not included the notes I would have assumed it to be a surgery or prep room. I think the B&W suits the subject matter.

Quite a place...looks like the sort that will drown out hose very uncertainties. And much needed is this sort of woman behind the bar, I'm sure she won't take any lip...even from doctors. I like the sepia toning for an aged look and the Christmas lights strung across sho that bars/pubs are the same all over.

You really caught the expression on the lady's face well here, and she is nicely off centre. I like the warm lighting and rather antique look of the tavern. It has a 1950's feel. Your perspective was well chosen. Its a keeper. Cheers.

Ainda vais conseguindo descobrir umas preciosidades nos teus arquivos, António. Estes tons sepia estão muito bem para esta velha taberna. Gosto de vê-la a olhar para ti, mas mais do que isso, de 'devorar' todos os pormenores com os meus olhos ávidos. Estes lugares são autênticas relíquias e pergunto-me por quanto tempo ainda vão resistir às modernices que aparecem por todo o lado. A inclusão do lado direito foi sem dúvida uma boa escolha, mostrando detalhes que enriquecem a composição e mesmo o pilar ajuda a segurar o conjunto. Sem ele, se calhar não tinha tanta piada. Lembro-me da outra imagem, que visitei há não muito tempo ;-)

Le sépia donne un air rétro et une ambiance a cette taverne,elle me fait penser aux bars a tapas en Espagne vers les années 60 ou le sol était toujours en terre battue.
Une belle composition.

Hi Antonio,
this is just the right place for drink a glass of wine. (I don't like the fancy restaurants where you order the wine by which bottle you like) Also in my town there are still places where you can order just two types of wine: black (lately is called red by some snobs ;))) or white... no labels. The same for everybody, for the rich and for the poor... oh... sorry... the photo... I like it. The lady seems very simpathic and after some moments I could feel like at home here. Nice photo.

I always think that Portugal holds a piece of my heart. Somehow the people, the stones, the land impact me like very few places I know. This shot is a testament to that, Antonio, a beautiful daily life with the details that move me so deeply, these little details of the woman's daily life. Wonderful sepia. Very nice work!

Tabernas como estas já começam a ser muito raras, pelo que é bom que se preservem em fotografia quanto antes.
Esta está excelente, com toda a profusão de pormenores para apreciar, uma compo cuidada e excelente exposição, algo que não deve ter sido fácil.
A sépia é boa ideia, pois acentua o ar antigo - não fosse a televisão e a registadora e podia passar por ter pelo menos 50 anos.
Concordo um pouco com o xuaxo - aquela coluna incomoda um bocado e afinal, a parte da direita não é assim tão importante.

Oi Antonio,

A universidade de Coimbra formou as elites brasileiras durante o periodo colonial, tenho muita vontade de conhece-la. Gosto do clima da foto, o sepia e perfeito para a cena e a composicao com a pilastra cria uma especie de 2 dimensoes na foto. So preferiria que a modelo estivesse em outra postura.

Boa foto António! Lembro-me de teres falado dela quando publiquei aquela da taberna da Guarda. A composição é muito boa e quase me apetece ver isto a cores (não fosse o teu sepia ser tão bonito e ter um carácter tão forte). Os detalhes são imensos e a exposição está muito boa. Não mudava nada! Excelente.

The sepia does emphasize the taverna's long history; I agree with the intent of Francisco's crop but I would leave taht great pillar. What happened to the other tavernas? Converted to condos? or has Portugal gone dry? SAA, Pat

Imagino a quantidade de histórias de fazer corar os senhores doutores que esta senhora não terá para contar.
Excelente luz e atsmofera tipicas das nossas tão portuguesas tascas. A senhira parece um pouco surpreendida dava a impressão que estava a arrumar qualquer coisa por trás do balcão quanto sentiu o click.

Hi Antonio, in 1996 I was in Vila do Conde (north of here, near Porto) for a trampoline competition. My kids were competing. While there my wife and I stopped in at a restaurant very similar to this one. We didn't speak Portuguese and the owner and his wife didn't speak English so it was interesting ordering our meal, but it turned out great. I have fond memories of that one. This shot of yours takes me back.

Boas Ribeiro, desculpa a ausência de comentar fotos tuas, não tenho tido muito tempo para tal, só mesmo para colocar fotos de Angola e escrever algumas notas fatelas, aqui sempre com faltas de energia eléctrica as coisas vão se abaixo quando estamos no meio delas e depois perde-se a vontade de tudo.

Quanto há tua foto, muito linda, gostei da perspectiva e as cores sepia estão muito representadas dando um ar antigo às coisas em volta, gosto muito de Coimbra foi lá aonde o meu irmão nasceu e brinquei muito no Luso aonde passei pequenas férias quando era pequeno.

Acho simplesmente "deliciosas" estas tabernas "à moda antiga".
A tua foto está muito boa...e esse tratamento de "old colour" assenta muito bem aqui.
A senhora é que não parece muito satisfeita com o facto de estar a ser fotografada ;-)
