Photographer's Note

Here is a photo I took from the painted walls of Moldovitza Monastery, one of the best preserved monuments of this type in Bukovina (NE Romania). It was built in 1576 in moldavian architectonic style. The paintings include religious scenes, but also cultural and historical ones. The photo illustrates the Battle of Constantinople.

“The Conquest (or Fall) of Constantinople was the capture of the Byzantine capital by the Ottoman Empire under the command of Sultan Mehmed II, in 1453. This marked not only the final destruction of the Eastern Roman Empire, and the death of Constantine XI, the last Byzantine emperor, but also the strategic conquest crucial for Ottoman rule over the Eastern Mediterranean and Balkans. “(Wikipedia)
