Gostuša, an isolated village in south-east Serbian side of the Balkan Mts, sprang into popularity in recent years due to a call for its unique traditional stone roofs to be renewed and saved from extinction. Local owners are unable to finance re-roofing with stone plates, which can cost upwards of thousands of Euro, so they instead re-roof with modern brick tiles. Some deplore the loss of traditional architectural features, and yet the state does little to support its preservation.
Gostuša is a great base for a hiking vacation in the Balkans. There are a few guest houses in the village with modern conveniences and food that is out of this world. Those that managed to preserve their stone roofing also provide pleasant cool during the hottest summer months without any need for an AC.
