Photographer's Note

The Slovaks are a western Slavic people with a large history which begins from the era of the Empire of Samo and the Principality of Nitra, founded sometime in the 8th century.

After a long and turbulent history, Slovakia and the regions of Bohemia and Moravia formed a common state, Czechoslovakia, in 1918.

Finally Slovakia has been established as an independent country after January 1, 1993, an event sometimes called the Velvet Divorce.

The current form of the flag of Slovakia was adopted by Slovakia's Constitution, which in common with other Slavic nations, uses the white, blue and red colours.

Slovakia's flag in its present form (but with another coat of arms) can be dated back to the Anti-Habsburg Revolution 1848.
