Photographer's Note

Monument to King Alfonso XII of Spain is a sculpture located in the Jardines del Retiro de Madrid, Retiro Park.

In 1902 he convened a national competition to build a monument to King Alfonso XII, the initiative of the Queen Mother María Cristina. The winner was the architect Grases Jose Riera with a great project in one of the sides of the Pond's Retreat consists of a colonnade with a large number of sculptures that surround the equestrian statue of King, at the side of the pond. This bronze and marble. At death, was replaced in the direction Teodoro Anasagasti not amended. The monument, financed by popular subscription, was opened on June 6, 1922.

The whole thing measured 30 meters high, 86 meters long and 58 meters wide, and participated in its development over twenty sculptors. It was the first commemorative statue of the last century that were populating the garden works as Benlliure of Clare and Matthew Inurria among others.

First we see the equestrian statue of King, cast in bronze by Mariano Benlliure in 1904. In the central base, "La Paz" in Blay, 'freedom' and Marinas "El Progreso" Trillo. In the base three bronze reliefs. Central monument of staircases to move around the pond with four stone lions and carved Vallmitjana Estany. Below their pedestals, bronze, four sirens work Parera, Atche, Coll and Alsina. There are two lions with cherubs on each side of the entrances to the chamber works of Francisco Javier Escudero Lozano, Bofill, Arnau and Campmany. On both sides of the access to the central colonnade, 'Army' of Montserrat and 'Marina' Matthew Inurrria. On the inner side, facing the pond are represented in bronze, 'Science' of Fuxá "Agriculture" of Alcoverro 'Arts' of Bilbao and "Industry" of course. Friezes and ornamentation of the basement was done by central Estany.
