Photographer's Note

When we returned from Vitra Campus to Basel in Sunday, we saw everywhere the groups of people marching and playing - flutes, big trumpets and drums. we were very surprised and could not understand what was going on? Usually they were in black dressed and small black hats. I saw these guy sitting with bear so I asked about the event. The said it was Carnival. But we have lent now, I was confused.

Bummel - the strolls form the end of the Carnival Year and take place on the three Sundays following Fasnacht.

It is tradition, without costume and larva, with or without instruments to visit the near or further region and the three most beautiful days once more review.

From 4 pm the active march through the inner city, most of them take the Free street in the direction of the Market Square.
There were so many groups that I had an impression that every inhabitant of Basel can play an instrument.

A daily life image with a good touch of humour to it. The guy sitting on his own looks very aloof and doesn't want to get involved or engage with you. Perfectly realised with superb colours and clarity.

A very nice company with hat but the man with beard is very quiet and waits when coming the people with flag.
Also your second picture is a nice addition.

Hello Malgo,

I can only imagine the sounds and sights on such an all inclusive carnival day!
These guys got a double treat, to be on your photograph and to have a beer at the best pub in town!
I like this close-up, full of good humour.

Did you have a drink?
We found the prices quite expensive but it was important to sample some of the different pubs/hotels.

Hello Malgo,
This photo is bright and amusing. The two men to the right enjoyed their beers and to act a bit like clowns in front of your camera. There is a lot to see here. The movie is fun too, but the people marching trough the city look rather calm and serious, not really like they are having a party. They show the same restraint in the WS. Maybe it had something to do with the weather.

They look like they've escaped from "Men in Black"! The lady in the middle looks at them with bemusement; the bearded man just wishes they would go away and let him drink his beer in peace. An amusing street grab shot.

Yes there are lots of local traditions in Switzerland, that foreigners have no idea of. So you were lucky. Joyful group portrait on these street side bar tables. I also like the vivid background colours.

Hello Malgo,

What an entertaining photo with a suitable title. Clearly, you and your lens charmed these fellows. Did you happen to wonder to the Einstein Haus in Basel where he enjoyed his (first) Annus Mirabilis in 1905, formulating the photoelectric effect theory, Brownian Motion, and the Special Theory of Relativity? The second one came in 1915 in Berlin when he formulated the General Theory of Relativity.

I usually prefer candid photography, but this posed photo is splendid. I find the two gentlemen's pose amusing. The background colors are terrific, too.
