Photographer's Note

Here I show you the church of the tiny village Sufers, canton Grisons, high up in the Swiss Alps. I passed it many many years on the Autobahn to San Bernardino pass and tunnel, the Autobahn to the south...

This year I traveled on the small street not far away from the main roadway. It touches all small villages here in the upper Hinterrhein valley, called Rheinwald, in an altitude of about 1500 metres - such as Sufers.
This village (130 inhabitants), the oldest one in Hinterrhein valley, first was mentioned in a deed of the year 831 and and it got its first church, St. Salvator, ten years later as a donation of emperor Lothair I. The here shown today's church was built from 1618 to 1625. People here in former times - up to 20th century - earned their living in agriculture and by goods traffic across the Alps (Splügenpass to Italy and San Bernardinopass to Ticino are nearby) with sumpters.

In workshop you can see photos of the interior of the church.
