Ukrainian Red Sea, a photo from Khersonska, East

Photographer's Note

Rotten Sea or Sivash is a very salty and shallow bay of Sea of Azov between Kherson oblast (northern cost of Sivash) and Autonomous Republic of Crimea (southern cost). This picture was taken at the Sivash’s northern cost, near villages of Stroganivka and Ivanivka in Chaplinka’s rayon (district) of Kherson oblast.

The color of Sivash’s water depends on lighting (under sunlight it is pink or reddish, while the shadows of clouds make it turn violet or bluish) and depth (the dipper the bluer). The shallowness of Sivash makes it unsuitable for bathing and swimming. But near village of Pershokonstantinivka there is a spot, where the depth is up to several meters. This place is known as “Salt Pit” or “Salty Lake”. Allegedly it has appeared after falling of an airplane down there. Now this is the best recreational area of Chaplinka’s rayon.

this is a well thought minimalist composition but what I found very special here are the light and colors. The pastel tones enhance the dreammy atmosphere. Such an interesting site and a great photo!

Hello Sergiy,

I remember your precedent post on this place with astonishing ecology due to the massive presence of salt in water. A general sight which is quite as astonishing by contrasts between the ground and the sky. On the other hand I will not bathe here I think to avoid swallowing water !!!
