Only love... Crimea 2010, a photo from Krym, East

Photographer's Note

Yesterday Mariusz asked me why I haven't posted any photos from Crimea. Indeed, hearing the news I thought about my crimea trip three years ago. So I looked at my archive photo and I found this one. You can right guess that it is this poster that caught my attention - now, not in the time of making photo. Только любовь миром править должна - only love should rule the world. How beautiful the world would be if the politicians shared this opinion.
The photo was made in Chersonesus, an ancient Greek colony founded approximately 2,500 years ago in the southwestern part of the Crimean Peninsula, known then as Taurica. The colony was established in the 6th century BC by settlers from Heraclea Pontica. The ancient city is located on the shore of the Black Sea at the outskirts of Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula of Ukraine, where it is referred to as Khersones. It has been nicknamed the "Ukrainian Pompeii" and "Russian Troy".
In 2007, Chersonesus tied for fifth in the Seven Wonders of Ukraine poll.
On February 13, 2009, Ukrainian Defence Minister Yuriy Yekhanurov called on Russia's Black Sea naval fleet to move its automobile depot from the site to another place. The location of the Russian Black Sea naval fleet's automobile depot is one of the obstacles to the inclusion of the reserve on UNESCO's list of world heritage sites.The encroachment of modern building in and around the ancient archaeological site, coupled with a lack of funding to prevent such development pressures, has left the site of Chersonesus firmly at risk.
In an October 2010 report titled Saving Our Vanishing Heritage, Global Heritage Fund identified Chersonesus as one of 12 worldwide sites most "On the Verge" of irreparable loss and destruction, citing insufficient management and development pressures as primary causes.

Czesc Malgorzata,
ha ha dziekuje! Mam nadzieje ze nikt nas nie zatruje polonem za ta prezentacje. Pamietam ze pokazywalas tez zdjecie floty czarnomorskiej i pomyslalem ze cos w ten desen raczej wkleisz ale i ten tytul pasuje tutaj znakomicie!
Coraz wiecej pieknych miejsc jest niedostepnych dla turystow, jaka to szkoda nie mowiac oczywiscie o tym ze coraz wiecej ludzi nie zyje w pokoju. Mialas wiele szczescia ze udalo Ci sie zobaczc sporo z tych miejsc jak Syria czy tez Krym zanim staly sie niebezpieczne. Oby wszystkie szybko "wychodzily na prosta" tak jak Gruzja..

Ciao Malgorzata,

Quand on regarde de près la carte géographique de la région, on comprend l'idée de Poutine de vouloir récupérer cette erreur de Kroutchev. Mes ses gros sabots dérangent la communauté internationale.
Inquiet de voir comment cela va se terminer.

Hello Malgo,
This is a nice photo, if not really spectacular, but the message of the poster is ironically important today. This building must have looked very elegant decades ago. It still looks quite good although it is being overgrown and shows signs of neglect. I think all of the northern Black Sea region is full of ancient Greek sites being dangerously threatened, and in many cases probably already destroyed.

Beautiful words, and my words can add nothing to that. As I sit here right this moment watching events unfold on the evening news, I can only hope this message may resonate. Sadly, I fear it will not, but as humans we live with eternal hope.

I'm not sure what I like more, the fact you've expressed such a topical subject, or that you went back through your archive? :))

Such a pity we have these kinds of current situations. Although I've never visited, I'm saddened when I see the loss of life and the destruction of such historical and beautiful cities. A very apt and timely photo to post, especially as the world watches closely. A lovely message to spread at this moment, and a pleasant image to convey the sentiments. Hoping for the best possible outcome. Thanks for sharing the thoughtful concern. All the best.

A really timely shot, Malgo, and I'm sad to hear of the poor state of Chersonesus - I can't imagine recent events have done it any benefit. The message of your photo is a prescient one, and hopefully it can penetrate the minds of those who have brought about this crisis. Thanks for this symbolic look back.

Hi Malgo,

How right you are! If love did rule the World, it would be wonderful - if only power-hungry politicians could learn that simple fact.

I was particularly attracted to this picture because my great grandfather might well once have stood here because he fought against the Russians at Sevastopol during the Crimean War in 1856.

Your photograph gives a strong message because of that poster on the arch - very kind of you to translate it for us too! But it is also a very well composed shot, the archway having been captured obliquely and in lovely light. The old stonework contrasts nicely with the fresh green foliage too.

A very appropriate upload at this time!

This is such a beautiful photograph of the ancient building. Beautifully framed with fine details and lovely natural colours. Your note reflects the fate of many such sites of historical significance across the world. Heritage buildings getting demolished by land sharks is not uncommon in India as well.
