Photographer's Note

When in Ukraine, I have made a day trip from my hometown (Berezhany) to Brody. It was a rainy day and among the things I visited in Brody was this impressive Jewish cemetery. I did not manage to escape the rain though...
The new Jewish cemetery in Brody, Lviv region, west Ukraine. For centuries, Brody was one of the most historically significant centers of Jewish life in Eastern Europe. In the early 19th century, Jews comprised almost 90% of the population.

This Jewish cemetery is outside the city of Brody in an agricultural setting. The cemetery is one of two that once served Jews of Brody. It was built during a cholera epidemic and contains tombstones that go back to the first half of the 19th century. These stones are unusually tall, some of them more than six feet. The cemetery is to be restored and is noteworthy because almost 3,000 inscribed and decorated gravestones have survived.
