Photographer's Note

This is the steam pressure gauge from steam locomotive 4468 Mallard, a Gresley A4 pacific class express locomotive built in 1938 and holder of the official world speed record for steam. Here the gauge is reflected and distorted in the highly polished cab roof of the locomotive in a strange way bringing to mind the paintings of Dali and his melting clocks.

Gresley and Dali were contemporaries, Dali painted his famous "melting clocks" painting "The Persistence of Memory" in 1931, Gresley's A4 Pacifics were designed in 1935. Any other connection is surely coincidental... unless you know better!?
