Photographer's Note

This is the astral clock at Snowshill Manor. The gardens here were designed by Charles Wade, and the clock is in Wade Blue, a colour designed to go well with the local Cotswold limestone of the buildings. The gardens are also planted largely with blue, and the manor has a wonderful rustic atmosphere.

Hi Alan,
I think tight crop works well on shots like this where our brains can imagine the whole view. Strong colours and detailed artwork. I might still wish to see the centre of the clock that is just out of the frame.

Beautiful shot. The Wade Blue of the clock is really a wonderful color. I like your choice of framing the shot to focus only on the portion of the clock with the radiating sun rather than including the entire clock face - the details are better shown this way.

Alan - This shot works because of the immediate impact of the colour combined with the clarity of the subject with no other colour invading the shot.

My favourite colour combination.
Leaving the rest of the clock beyond frame is a good idea: makes it more dynamic and compositionally focused especially with the sun.

Hello Alan,
I'm a great fan of the Costwolds and never got a chance to see this clock.
It shall be one of my coming objectives then.
If the gardens are planted largely with blue, I guess you would advise me to wait until May or June to get nice?
