Photographer's Note
Another place rarely (if ever) shown on TE. Brick Lane. It is a haven for street art lovers, bargain hunters, foodies, and fashionistas.
In the heart of London’s East End, this cobbled street was once among the poorest slums in the capital; it became known for brick and tile production in the 15th century. Jews, French Huguenots and Irish immigrants later set up home here before the Bangladeshi-Sylheti community settled in the area and made Brick Lane famous for its curry restaurants.
Brick Lane (Bengali: ব্রিক লেন) is a street in the East End of London, in the borough of Tower Hamlets. It runs from Swanfield Street in Bethnal Green in the north, crosses the Bethnal Green Road before reaching the busiest, most commercially active part which runs through Spitalfields, or along its eastern edge. Brick Lane’s southern end is connected to Whitechapel High Street by a short extension called Osborn Street.
Today, it is the heart of the country's Bangladeshi community with the vicinity known to some as Banglatown. It is famous for its many curry houses.
More recently the area has also broadened to being a vibrant art and fashion student area, with considerable exhibition space. Each year most of the fine art and fashion courses exhibit their work near Brick Lane.
Since the late 1990s, Brick Lane has been the site of several of the city's best known night clubs, notably 93 Feet East and The Vibe Bar, both built on the site of The Old Truman Brewery, once the industrial centre of the area, and now an office and entertainment complex. .
Brick Lane has a regular display of graffiti, which features artists such as Banksy, Stik, ROA, D*Face, Ben Eine and Omar Hassan. The street has been used in many music videos, including "Glory Days" by Just Jack, "All These Things That I've Done" by The Killers, and "Überlin" by R.E.M.
The street is the location for Monica Ali's book Brick Lane, published in 2003, and the film of 2007 starring Tannishtha Chatterjee. The novel provoked a controversy with some of the local South Asian community because of a perceived negative portrayal of them. Parts of the Bengali community were particularly opposed to plans by Ruby Films to film parts of the movie based on the novel in the Brick Lane area and formed the "Campaign Against Monica Ali's Film Brick Lane". Consequently, the producers of the film used different locations for certain scenes, such as that depicting Brick Lane Market.

Hello Malgo,
Three good street photos of the kind I would also have liked to take. The main one is the best composition and shows the best mural. The pavement looks a bit messy (it could have been here) and the more "normal" graffiti further back is not so nice, although it creates a good big city atmosphere. The girls provide the life and some action that the photo needed.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Malgo,
I must remember this place the next time I'm in London (this weekend). The colourful mural look amazing. The street reminds me of some of the streets Brenda showed my father and me in New York. The brick façades make a good backdrop also and the two people are very well included.

Hi Malgo,
The presence of the persons is animating the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the murals. The light is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.

Ciao Malgo, certainly a truly picturesque place, many murals, many colors and many special and unique people like the chess seller in the WS. The homeland of curry, which I don't like very much, in a truly remarkable reportage, good contribution considering the few photos from here on this site. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Hi Malgo
This could be where some of my ancestors (Huguenots from Brittany) first settled. 3 good ones of the street art with the main one having additional interest in working out what was interesting the pair - the bike or???

Hi Malgo,
This place has certain rough charm. I like that mix of carefully painted big mural and typical graffiti. The women are well placed.

Hi Malgo.
A magnificent composition with the great chromaticism that this painting of the facade gives, it looks like a somewhat marginal street, with the street a little dirty and facades with many papers glued to the wall one on top of the other. The WS scenes confirm it for me.
Good work.
Have a great day.
Greetings.
Luis.

Pozdrav.
Volim grafite i murale, uvek snimam kad naidjem na njih.
Lep pogled i trenutak, interesantan tekst ...
Lep mural na staroj fasadi, dobo pokazano sa lepim bojama, kontrastom i uhvacenim trenutkom sa lepim biciklistkinjama.
Dobar rad sa lepim fotografijama u radionici.
Lepa scena sa ulice.
lepi grafiti i murali.
Zelim vam lep dan za odmor, sve najbolje.

Hello Malgo, this shot is a complete contrast to my post today! Worlds apart.
I remember reading Monica Ali's 'Brick Lane' some years ago, so reading your title made me curious.
Three excellent shots; good choice for the main post.
I like the words on the wall - "Aspire to inspire others and the universe will take note."
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards, Jean.

Dear Malgo,
In itself the photo is noteworthy, but with you notes it is really an interesting one. You did a great job in giving information about the subject.
Best Wishes,
Gy.

Hello Malgo,
I really love street art, so this would be a place I'd love to visit. The art is great, and I like the two women in the scene; one taking a photo and the other looking at the bicycle. There's some trash on the street, a quote on the wall above, and lots of stickers. I like all of it! :-)
