gary speed played football for most of his life.

during a distinguished professional career spanning twenty years he played for leeds united, everton, newcastle united, bolton wanderers, and sheffield united. he played eighty five times for his country, wales. he played until he could play no more and retired aged forty. last year he became manager of the wales national team.

last saturday i watched him as he appeared as a guest on a popular weekly football television show. he talked about the week’s top stories and his plans for getting wales to the next world cup finals. off air he chatted with the presenter and told him that there was no feeling in the world like playing football.

the following morning he was found hanged in the garage of his home aged 42.

each year over one million people worldwide commit suicide. wouldn’t it be great to be young again, without a care in the world and playing football in the park. this picture was taken as an under 12 team scored a last minute equalising goal in a thrilling 4 all draw.
