Women and Children First, a photo from Down, Northern Ireland

Photographer's Note

Ulster Transport Museum presents all kinds of transport in Northern Ireland and includes even a special exhibition of innovations. This one is tram n. 118 of Belfast Street Tramway Company. It is presented as it was in 1905 during the era when horse trams were converted to electric working. The sign saying "The lifeboat rule is women and children first" is polite but somehow does not give impression of safe means of transport.

Hello Kari,
That lifeboat sign is funny now but maybe it was less so in 1905. This was probably an interesting museum with well maintained old trams and probably buses. My favourite detail here is the way the little girl is looking at the man. I get an impression they are having an intelligent conversation about the transportation systems long ago.

A great photo of this old doubledecker tram. I really like the old design and the beautiful red colours. The people including the child are very well included in the foreground as well.

Face expression of the little kid made a fascinating attraction to this old tram picture, Kari.
The sign also drew atrtention as you made it as a title.
Altogether, such a museum is one charming advanture when visiting.

Hello Kari,
Nowadays it seems very pleasant to be able to sit in the upper part of this tram during a ride. Perhaps people experienced it differently in the past.
Going up or down the spiral staircase during the ride seems a bit dangerous to me.
Splendid and colourful presentation.
