Photographer's Note

Yes, this photo is grainy and noisy – and it was taken 56 years ago. Probably before many of you were born.

It's the Tower Bridge in London, built between 1886 and 1894, one of the most famous sights in the British capital and often shown on TE. Most of those photos are probably better than this, but possibly this is the oldest.

I took this photo in August 1964, just one or two days before I was to return to Sweden by boat after my first journey outside Scandinavia. I wasn't yet ready to travel on my own, so I had spent three weeks with friends of my mother's living in Yorkshire. My host drove me by car to London for a few days of sightseeing at the end of my journey.

This is the second oldest photo I have posted on TE. Only this one, taken one or two weeks earlier in northern Yorkshire, is older:

I would love to think the inclusion of a lot of people indicates that this was the kind of composition I preferred already in my very early days of photography. But the truth is probably that I just couldn't avoid them.

In the WS is a photo from London that would be hard to take now. They were both scanned from Ilford FP3 negatives.
