Photographer's Note
This famous rock feature, carved out by the sea over 1000's of years is on the Dorset coast and is possibly one of the most photographed features.
Shot on a very odd overcast day when the clouds seemed very thin and wouldn't hold much detail without blowing
Tech: exposing for the highlight gave a very flat image so used a grey card (on the floor just cropped out)& bracketed +-2 stops range.
In PS found the best exposure and used curves to match the 18%.
Pulled the shadows and pushed the highlights to get full range. I had to dodge the breaking waves in lab mode to brighten them up.

Excellent work despite I have been very puzzled with your technical explanation. Exactly how one becomes with the explanations of a very good cook. Congratulations.

..and nicely rendered in your classic style. A nice touch here is the timing, catching the wave evenly break right around the bay.

Nice image Richard.
exceptional POV, to see the curve of the sea waves, the cliff and the arch!
good PS work too. perhaps a little bit too much dark.

Hi Richard,
Nice wave curb, good contrast and light.
The rocks look little soft I find.

I really like this composition! The curve of the wave is beautiful, and links the 2 headlands. Great job toning the clouds down to a reasonable level, and still getting some good detail on the water. Very well done!

Hi Richard,
Very nice image and PP.
The light is great, mysterious, but what I really like the most in this one is the beautiful cirve of the wave !!! Perfect timing.
Adds clarity and movement to the pic.
Somehow, it also make the picture to look like tilted to the left, but in fact it's not.
Cheers,
Youssef.

Hello Richard,
Very nice picture and very good exploitation of a sad weather. I agree that the place seems to be wonderfull, but you succeed to get a very good composition with a bad weather.
Regards.

Wonderful Richard - a childhood haunt for me made to look hauntingly beautiful! The curve of the wave and the sky are fantastic and the compositional position of the land features just perfect! Almost dreamlike effect.

What a beauty - fabulous composition and interesting light created by the odd clouds. The curve of the wave is so seductive. I think it is your post processing that has turned into a really amazing shot though, and the result is certainly worth the time and effort you put into it.

Wow. Another outstanding photo Richard, and a great technical note, thank you.
This place is gorgeous and it seems so remote and empty. Your timing and luck in getting that curving crest makes the shot that much more special. Wow.

Excellent color toning. The graphic quality of this picture push it up to a higher rung. Great shot Richard.

A really impressive shot on several levels:
1. The fringe of the surf gives the scene something of a fisheye effect.
2. The arch itself resembles a huge stone elephant drinking from a river.
3. Because the surf approaches so close, it draws me into the scene.
4. The softness and faint glow of the clouds--it almost looks like the filter effect you get using Difference Clouds.
The only thing that mars this photo for me is the small rock or ship in the center.

Hi Richard...
funny touch, the very wide angle and the circular breaking of the wave... it gives the photo a nice smile, and me too ;)

i am beginning to like black and white and it is not easy to have a good eye to spot what goes well in b/w. Still got lots to learn from you. Lovely contrast and framing.

Very haunting wave line, Richard. The whole image is very moody and lovely at the same time. Brooding. Something magical will soon happen, and might not be all pretty pixies!

I rally like the dramatic composition made by the curve of the water line and I appreciate the technique you described to overcome the conditions and produce an artistic photo. Those dark tones work really well to enhace the mood.

Hi Richard, I seen photos of this famous place before but this is the first time in B&W. I also went thru your pictures and wish I can take B&W image just like your or at least convert B&W image just like your.
thanks for sharing

Both your work behind the camera and in post-processing is inspiring Richard. I always feel as though I want to see your images in a large format where all the fine subtleties would be clearly on display. Your images appear only rarely on the board, but they are always a treasure. The light on the water, in the distant cliffs, as well as the breaking surf, all beneath a brooding sky really make this image. Clearly, you seek the strong contrasts of nature in your images. Keeping details in the clouds as you do demonstrates fine work. Thanks as always Richard.
PS - Perhaps you've spoken to this before, but I'd be curious to learn what is "Lee's Red blue split."

What a super image Richard; great angle you've found to use your 12-24 lens which captures that beautiful curving wave to perfection.
A negative critisism, however, would be that the background cliffs on the right of frame do see to have rather "random" highlights on them.
Great.

superbe cadrage, un rendu de panorama qui laisse deviner le grand angle sans pour autant paraître trop "globuleux"

Eye catching and wonderful image. I like the lighting and your handling of post processing. If i had to search for a critique, i might like to see a bit more local contrast in the rock arch on the left or maybe a tad lighter? Why do you burn and dodge in lab mode?

the roundness of the wave line is very intriguing.
great tonal range, and I love the blackness of the water.

Nice work Richard!
A really good choice for B&W. I've recently been doing the same- playing around with burn and dodge, and find it quite useful.
Great composition and choice of framing to compliment the shot.
The only thing I'm not sure about is the somewhat fuzzy effect, I think it might look a bit better sharp. But that's a small point on an otherwise great shot.
Well done,
- Dan

A really excellent B&W image - I'm only coming across it now as I'm planning to visit this area in a few weeks from now.
The range of tones is superb, and the technique used seems to have been very effective. Great work!

Looks like an elephant sipping in water with its trunk. Amazing! The compo's really nice: the round wave with a center at the elepahnt's trunk. The clouds make the elephant even more "elephanty", I mean more live. The details of the water surface are marvellous!
