Photographer's Note

Bamburgh castle sits proudly on top of a rocky outcrop on the Northumbrian coast.

The Anglo Saxons built the first castle on this site in 547 and it stood for over 400 years before being destroyed by the Vikings in 993.

A second castle was built by the Normans in the 11th century and this now forms the core of the current castle, although there has been significant restoration from the 18th century onwards.
