Photographer's Note
As mentioned, the main attraction on our trip to the Negev-desert was the view down to the Yeruham-Crater, also named the Big-Crater (as there is a Small-Crater some 20+ km NE, and much larger Ramon-Crater in the Negev, 50+ km to the south). Clearly shown are the "breaking-layers" lines on the far side ridge.
A 14km long, 6km wide and 410m deep - result of 40 million years of earth activity (info from Wikipedia).
This spot on the map is at 30.9718, 34.972 on the edge of the crater along the #225 road (however we did not go further down in the road).
Several photos to follow with WS's as well.
Converted from RAW, F9.0, 1/400, ISO100, spot.

Hi Ike
A good photo of this desolate area. The large view shows clearly the textures and varying browns of the landscape.

Hi Ike,
Even though there are dozens of large meteorite craters in Australia, I haven't seen any of them. I also missed the ones in Arizona. The contorted geology of the bg hills attests to the violent impact. It would cause earthquakes throughout the Middle East if it happened again today. Tfs!

Hello Ike,
The three photos all show us what a fascinating area this is. I have always felt a strange attraction to deserts and the surprises of finding life where not expected. In this view it's certainly the lines along the distant hills that make the greatest impression.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi Ike,
The wideness of the area is creating depth. The point mof view is showing the details of the Yeruham-Crater. The light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Ike
Nowadays we can watch on YouTube many views from Mars and I consider they look alike this beautiful view of the Negev Desert; no Martian in sight in either panoramas!!
Thanks to reassure us!
Your trip toward the Negev was much less expensive than NASA's
to reach the 'red planet'!!

Hello Ike,
Excellence panorama with a relief that we almost never get to see.
The way meandered about the peak in the desert.
High quality and lovely detailed.
Very well done, TFS.
Nice weekend,

Hello Ike,
Scenes, like this, which clearly show how the Earth has been impacted over millennia, are quite fascinating!
I like how you can see the the different rock strata on the b/g hills.
This looks like a very desolate, arid area now.
There was a wonderful programme on TV recently, investigating the crater and the the meteorite which landed near Mexico and ultimately ended the life of the dinosaurs.
Have fossils been located in this area, Ike?
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Ike,
This vantage point offers an amazing view of this landscape and the crater. I really like the shapes and textures of the land as well. Good work.

Hello Ike,
I do remember the name Ramon Crater but I haven't been there.
A wonderful and very fascinating landscape.
Adding the road gives us a better indication of the scale.
In the pictures in the WS we can better see the vegetation that grows along a (dry?) river bed. A wadi?
Best regards, Paul

Hello Ike,
It's fascinating that this desolate and beautiful spot lies not that far away from bustling cities. It seems like there's not another person to be seen. I like the depth of this shot; the lines in the distance are clearly visible, and so are the textures and shapes of the crater. Take care!

Hi Ike,
This photo gives us a good view across the landscape and onto the hills in the background with their tilted rock layers.
Although it is called a crater, it is not a crater. It has nothing to do with volcanoes or meteorites. It is a dome caused by folding of the sedimentary rocks, which has been eroded away. This sort of geological structure is not unique to Israel. It is quite common in fact. For example there are many in the Zagros Mountains of Iran and the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. You can't believe everything in the tourist literature.

Hi Ike,
I like very much desert or volcanic landscapes. Although sometimes they are not easy to photograph, especially if you visit in the middle of the day the light is harsh. But of course you cannot everywhere be at the optimal moment especially when I travel with a child, so too often I end up in a nice place at the worst time of the day, around the noon.
This is a specatcular landscape but I think to make it more colorful you would probably need to visit at a sunset or sunrise time.
I like the sigmoidal curve of the road in the distance,
Very well seen and captured,
M

Hi Ike.
Very interesting panorama of this desert, which certainly looks desolate without any plants, very irregular terrain that gives beautiful nuances to the image.
Great color, well managed the brightness and the sharpnes.
Well done. That we enjoy.
Have a nice day.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hi Ike
great to see something so different here.
Wasn't expecting this.
Looking at this, I can't help but wonder what lays underneath, what treasures are waiting to be dug up, an archeologists dream perhaps? I viewed the WS's and the other newly posted shots too, very nice. cheers

Hello Ike,
Interesting scenery from the Negev. Is the crater from an extinct volcano or a meteor?
Regards,
MT
