It was their territory, so I carefully approached from the side... (the "big" animal out-of-focus in the foreground may look as a cow, or bull, from this low point-of-view, but it's, in fact, a dog too...)

Dogs are territorial animals. This means that they "stake out a claim" to a particular space, area or object.

They let other people and animals know about their claim by a variety of methods and at many levels of intensity.

For example, dogs may protect their territory by posturing, staring, marking, barking, or waiting.
