Photographer's Note

These are the Roman ruins of the Temple of Hercules. There used to be a giant statue estimated at 15 metres high, but all that remains is part of the hand seen here and an elbow out of frame at right. The citadel has a multitude of ruins from different eras and an interesting museum.

Back then Amman was known as Philadelphia. The name was changed to Amman by the Muslims in the 7th century AD.
