Photographer's Note

This is a view of the Petra's Siq, the long, narrow road, in a deep valley, leading to The Treasuure. The two men are my colleagues!
The Siq is one of the most wonderful palces in the world and the perfect entrance to the magic of Petra Valley.
The rocks are red-rose-violet-yellow... and tehy change their colors with the light so, everytime you walk there you can see another Siq!
The pavement of the Siq was sand and rock, but Romans built a stone road that is still visible here and there. But recently JOrdan authorities has concreted the sand parts with cement. It's a pity, but they say it's for tourist security... I hope that it's the truth!

The Siq seems a canyon, but it's not the result of water erosion, but of tectonic movement. The winding grooves cut in the rocks on your left are roman or byzantine canalizations to avoid water erosion. All the Petra valley was interested by this canalization system so that the wonderful architecture of the tombs and the rocks of the valley could mantain their beauty. The time and the abandon of the city has riuned this systeem and the tombs facades are at risk of disappearing forever. To avoid this tragedy UNESCO has promoted an international project to study and restore the antique canalization system, it seems that they have almost succeded in studying... now we all are waiting for the full restoration
