Palmyra revisited, a photo from Hims, South

Photographer's Note

Palmyra was one of the most beautiful places I visited last year. I have posted already some shots of the main part of the ruins. Here the Baal Shamin Temple lying off the beaten track that I visited on my own.

Baal was a major northwest Semitic god, perhaps head of the pantheon of the Biblical Philistines and father to the god Dagon. A mystery surrounding the term Baal was that it was also a word that meant "Lord" and applied to several different gods. Very little is known about the worship of Baal. The remains of the temple dedicated to Baal Shamin, the Semitic deity which resembles Bel is located to the northeast of the main Tetrapylon. It was first built in 17 AD but was further built and reconstructed in the 2nd and 3rd centuries.

Even to Syria you have been? Amazing, you are unstoppable. Wonderful light here, the warm golden tones are just magnificent. I love the details of the ruins and the clouds in the sky accentuate the drama of the scene.

Dear Malgo!
The old temple bathed in wonderful warm glow is delightful! What I also like (in fact my eyes get dragged towards) is the 4 column edifice on the left bathed by the same wonderful light. Good work with a fine brief note as well!

Hello, Malgo,

You were lucky to see this before it was so senselessly destroyed by Isis this week. I hope it is rebuilt stone by stone the same as Sarajevo City Hall. It took a lot of work and money to repair and rebuild, but I have to admire the tenacity of the Bosnians & also the Poles too after the destruction of Warsaw by Nazi Germany.
