Photographer's Note

Palmyra is an ancient city of central Syria, located in an oasis 130 miles (210 km) NE of Damascus. Once dubbed the "Bride of the Desert," Palmyra was a vital stop for caravans crossing the Syrian desert. Palmyra was mentioned in the Old Testament as being fortified by Solomon and it flourished in Roman times. There is much to see at the site today, including several temples dedicated to Aramean, Babylonian and Mesopotamian deities. Its magnificent remains tell of a heroic history during the reign of Queen Zenobia. The ancient ruins are a World Heritage Site and are one of the most popular tourist destinations in Syria.
