Transformed Sirince, a photo from Izmir, Aegean

Photographer's Note

A beautiful drive from Kayseri, past the deep blue waters of the Aegean sea, vineyards and orchards took us to the elevated heights of Şirince. Nestling high in the inland hills among wild orchards and rolling groves, Şirince is a scenic little village dotted with a dollhouse collection of stone and stucco houses. The area was probably settled when Ephesus was abandoned, but what we see today mostly dates from the 19th century

Old maps show the village’s name variously as Kyrkindje, Kirkindsche, Kirkidje, Kirkica, Kirkinca—which may date from these monastic settlements—but the village’s more well-known name before Sirince was actually Çirkince. The origin of this name is not known for certain, but it is rumoured that that a group of freed Greek slaves who moved here in the 15th century called the village Çirkince (Ugliness) to deter others from following and to conceal the village’s existence and attractiveness from people who lived in the valley below. This name remained unchanged until 1926 when the Governor of Izmir declared the name would henceforth be 'Sirince' or Beautiful place. Though the beauty of the village remained the same, the transformation of its name was now complete & justifiably so :-)

Today the village is a perfect synthesis of Turk-Greek culture as of the 1920's. The typical Greek houses, though they kept their original outside characteristics, have a local layout inside.

I took this picture in the early hours of the morning sitting in a terrace and sipping a nice strong Turkish Coffee. In the left of the frame, looming amidst the typically Greek design houses, you can see the back side of the nicely restored Greek Orthodox St. John Baptist church.

its great to see these types of shots from Turkey.
as much as i enjoy the typical touristy shots of famous landmarks, these are just as fun to view and to take.

it was worth it to be up in the morning light, proof is in the pudding as they say :)

really like the reds and browns mixed with greens and blues. contemplative mood.

Hello Angshu,

It was a really good decision to capture the scene in early morning light for that is the most immediate detail, the beautiful, rich colours.
The village mounts the hillside like attractive, orange steps, decorated at intervals with green vegetation, and creating a fine diagonal for the purpose of your excellent composition.

The distance between the village and the mountain in the background is gving depth to the composition. THe point of view is showing the details of the buildings and houses. The good luminosity is enhancing the beauty of the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Angshu - I loved the little village of Şirince especially at the day's end when all the tour buses had departed and one could wander around the peaceful place. This is a good shot with the green adding to the feel for the location. I see the St John the Baptist Church commanding the main FP, a lovely stone building which refers to the Greek influence. Fond memories for me.

Hello Angshu,

Another wonderful view of that verdant and charming village, that, at least in the Summer contrasts much with the arid expanses of Central Anatolia from where you had came. Maybe the saturation is a little overdone for some tastes, but being so early in the morning, perhaps it is not so unrealistic with that splendid light and it is pleasant to see those vivid colours.

There is only one minor flaw: it is slightly tilted to the left.

So this is what Sirince looks like. I missed seeing it both times I was in the area. Maybe third time lucky! A marvellous clear blue sky that contrasts well against the red rooftops. I like the flowering purple tree in the fg too. Excellent sharpness and a nice high pov. Tfs!
