Bridge over the Meriç River, a photo from Edirne, Marmara

Photographer's Note

After crossing Ekmekçizade Ahmet Paşa Bridge (Tunca Bridge) and driving about half a kilometer along Lozan Street, the road brought us to our last bridge of the day, the one over the Maritsa (Meriç) River. This structure is called the New Bridge (Yeni Köprü) or the Maritsa Bridge (Meriç Köprüsü).

"The name of this bridge is somewhat misleading, although it is actually the newest of the Ottoman bridges in Edirne. Still, it is a historical structure. The decision to construct it was made in 1832, during the visit of Sultan Mahmud II in Edirne. He decided that the existing wooden bridge was not a good enough solution.

However, due to financial problems, the construction of the bridge began only ten years later, under the reign of the sultan Abdulmecid I. The construction was completed in 1847. The commemorative inscription, placed on the bridge, was destroyed during the Greek occupation of Edirne in the years 1920-1922.

At present, the New Bridge, supported [by] 12 arches, is famous among Edirne residents as the place to admire the most beautiful sunsets." (Gleaned from Turkish Archaeological News.)

Hello Murat,
I might have thought hard which one to use as main upload: this or WS #2 showing Selimiye and the bridge in a vertical shape. Any of them would have done well. The closer view with reflections in the other WS is also nice.

Merhaba Murat
Indeed, it's not a very new bridge but quite new compared to many others. Names and history of bridges can be a topic for a long debate, e.g. the Old Bridge of Mostar is, sadly, a very new replacement of the original one. When you first hear about London Bridge you are sometimes told it's the oldest bridge across the Thames but it's in fact a fairly new and uninspiring concrete structure.
Nice set of three photos. My favourite is WS#2, there is magic about it and I love the play of light and shadow you captured. The main image gives us a good idea what the bridge looks like.

Hello Murat,
The composition is really well balanced between the arches of the bridge at left and the river and the other side next to it. That arch on the other end is a nice detail as well. The colours and light are rich and vivid.
