Photographer's Note
Istanbul Trip, Day 1, Scene 2
When we got to Istanbul, the weather was still nice. In fact, when the captain announced that it was 14° C and partially cloudy, I thought "Nice!" As I got on a cab from the airport, I could see the dark clouds in the north and got the news from the cab driver they were expecting rain and cold the following week.
In the afternoon, we walked to Emirgan Sütiş as my first venture out of the house. During my travel to Turkey and the first few days there, the buzz was on the Russian invasion of the Crimea. So, when I saw this warship sailing north through the Bosphorus, I grabbed my camera and ran out. In photography, my motto is "Shoot first, ask questions later." My niece guessed that it was the USS Truxtun, which had been reported to enter the straits a while ago. When I did my research for this note, lo and behold, I found this blurb about this warship in Wikipedia: On 6 March 2014, the U.S. Navy confirmed that the USS Truxtun left Greece on the way to the Black Sea and was going to conduct training with the Romanian and Bulgarian navies. On 5 March 2014, Turkish authorities gave permission to a U.S. Navy warship to pass through the Bosphorus Straits. This modest U.S. show of force a single warship to the Black Sea was intended to calm the nerves of former Soviet republics and satellites nervous about Russias actions in invading and taking Crimea in Ukraine, and was meant as "strategic reassurance".
USS Truxtun Boğazda: İstanbul Seyahati, Gün 1, Sahne 2
İstanbul'a vardığımızda, hava hala güzeldi.

Hello Murat,
Not exactly the kind of weather I'd like to have on a journey, but it provides a very nice picture of the misty edges of the Bosphorus with the houses spread all over the slopes.
If you don't know Istanbul, you can not even say with certainty how high these hills still reach. Frankly, even much higher than I remember from a long-ago trip.
The blurred image of this city on the hills still has a certain charm.
Regarding the USS Truxtun: That is another story. Hopefully each interested party uses common sense.
Best regards, Paul

hello Murat, What a documentary shot. The weather not inviting but the photo with this fog looks very attractive. How these events evolve is so worrying.
have a nice weekend

Easy sailing on the Bosphoros, not a battle charged speed, Murat, indication also from the low wakes it left behind the stern.
Yet, interesting situation that Turkey is in the major waterway between the super-powers.
Fine shot inspite the grey sky over, very dynamic.

Hello Murat,
an impressive and unsettling view under the current circumstances in Ukraine. I instinctively juxtaposed this theme and its atmosphere to your post of a few days ago "İstanbulu Anıyorum". Such a striking contrast! You captured this scene very aptly, the depth is great and the background is interesting too. The moody fog and the colours can reinforce a particular interpretation of the scene. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,
Ourania

Hello Murat,
Interesting. Looks a little like the Turkish navy shipyards and museum near Kocaeli. Good sharpness considering the distance and the speedboat alongside provides scale. The heavy overcast skies have given diffused light and maximum shadow detail. Tfs!

Hi Murat,
You're capturing well this scene by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the spectacle that the USS Truxtun of the U.S. Navy passes through the Bosphorus Straits. It's also impressive in the many tasteful houses which stand on hill or mountain slope in back. I suppress to describe my political issue for right or wrong of annexation problem in Ukraine. It seems to the difference of the opinion of West and Russia about justice, and the quality of the political competence of Putin and Obama is tried in this time.
Kind regards,
mikio

Hello Murat,
As I read in your note this to be a US frigate why does it have a Turkish flag, is it customary to hoist the flag of the country through which it is passing through? I like the unequal competition between the huge warship and the small speedboat. The grey warship has blended well with the grey sky and grey water. Fine shot despite the low light. Thanks for sharing.

Subho

Hi Murat,
The distance between the warship and the shore is giving deph to the composition. The point of view is showing the détails and the colours of the warship. The cludy sky is givin a god contrast to the olours. Have a nice day.
