Photographer's Note

I met with Burak at the Kadıköy Ferry Pier and we decided to take the subway to Üsküdar and walk back to Kadıköy. I took this photo at the entrance to Kadıköy station. It is not all that extraordinary, I just liked the lines of and the reflections from the arched walls. It was also a novelty for me to ride the subway in Istanbul. You see, when I lived in Istanbul (prior to 1982), all mass transit was on the surface with the exception of Tünel, the underground funicular operating between Karaköy and Beyoğlu (Pera) since 1875. Istanbul is a city of extremes, its subway system is probably the newest one in Europe while its 573 meter long funicular line is the oldest surviving underground urban rail line in continental Europe.
