Tombs of Kaunos, a photo from Mugla, Aegean

Photographer's Note

"The spectacular Kaunos city walls were erected during the reign of Mausolos in the 4th century BC. They are extraproportional in relation to the size of Kaunos and its population, presumably because the satrap had high expectations of the city's future as a marine and commercial port. The city walls start west of the inner port and run along the hills N and NW of the city, to the top of the steep cliff opposite Dalyan centre. There is a walking track along the wall, starting at the Çandır water station. The regularly-shaped rectangular blocks and the way the blocks have been positioned give a fine impression of Hellenistic building techniques. Parts of the wall are well-kept, other parts have been taken down and rebuilt."

It is spactacular to see a sight like this, with beautiful old carved tombs in mountain-side rocks.
The shaded area is a bit a miss - but you might not have a choise, and taking it inspite.
Verdant in FG and on top, give a natural "grame".

Vraiment spectaculaire ces érections à même le rock. La prise de vue est excellente et le bel éclairage met les bien en évidence et nous laisse bien voir les détails de l'architecture. J'imagine beaucoup de bras pour faire ce travail.

Hi Alin,
Very interesting picture of an antique necropolis of Turkey. Good details of the well-preserved tombs set in a natural site of rocks enhanced by the green vegetation, which makes a nice contrast.
Turkey is so rich in antic ruins. I believe there are 10000 antic cities. I visited several during my visit in November 2010. I am adding a photo of the necropolis in Myra, near Demre, province of Antalya.
