Photographer's Note
A Bull Elk spotted along the Bow Valley Parkway on the outskirts of Banff. Elk are the second largest members of the deer family, the largest being a moose.
The Bow Valley Parkway offers more photographic opportunities then the Trans- Canada highway as well as the fact that it's alot easier to stop when you're not on a highway!
For more images from my recent trip back to Canada, they're available on my travelogue.
I hope you like the shot!

Fantastic shot, Dan. I can see so much detail on the elk's face and hide. He seems to be looking right at you. You must have been very close, remarkably. Nice exposre at high speed, but the large aperture didn't leave the background too blurry. Wonderful wild-life capture.

Andrew

Wow, looks like you got nice and close to this guy! Very impressive antlers too, and you even got him looking straight at you - great shot! The Bow Valley Parkway is so much nicer than the Trans Canada Highway, I glad that you discovered it. Great work!

Well when I see the size of those racks I would have to agree with those who told you not to get so close to this foraging beast. Just think if he had turned on you!!!I can just imagine that should you have been pierced through with your dear life coming to an end....and after the family had said their goodbye...it would make a wonderful memorial to have all your Trek friends take all your L lens and place them inside their bags and hang them on this Elk rack for the the late and well missed Daniel Walsh Studios Memorial Wall Display. So take care when you venture out too close Daniel! Oh yes great shot!

Hi Dan,
I think he's gunning for you - it must be your rolling suitcase he mistakes for the sounds of love...You controlled the exposure level well here, as the light was strong. The quality of the grasses is well maintained, which is hard to do, given the constraints of TE as to size with resulting compression. I am thinking of reducing drastically some of my nature shots because there is too much quality lost in larger posts...Love the clarity of detail on this fine specimen. Cheers, Dan...later.

Hi Dan!
Having browsed your Canadian gallery, I decided it was too hard to pick a favourite! So I picked this one to comment on today, only because I was out on the Bow River at Canmore yesterday 'shooting elk' myself! This is a pretty impressive shot with a 24-70 lens - I bet you could've smelt his breath! Great capture - well done & TKS.
Best wishes,
Jeff
