Photographer's Note

The memorial has been placed at the first of three houses, namely 277 Frederick Street. "Momma", as she was known, was born in Estonia in 1912. She worked as a teacher and nurses' aid during WWII; then spent 5 years in a German Refugee Camp at Augsberg. She bought this house in the 1950s to help refugees with nowhere to stay. The refugees were followed by teenage lawbreakers sent to correctional institutions. Mid 1970s, more space was needed so two nearby homes were added. She was the mother to all adult orphans, ex-psychiatric patients, alcoholics and other seemingly hopeless individuals. Her work was recognized with the Order of Canada in 1983.

"It takes a heap o' livin' in a house t' make it home"
