Photographer's Note
One of the great features of Vancouver is that it's on the ocean and has many beaches. This one is called Third Beach and it's located in Stanley Park. From here you can look out at the outer harbour and see ships waiting there to dock in the port. You can also see the lights of West Vancouver on the right. I like the smooth water and beach from the 20 second exposure used in this shot.

Hello Alvin,
This surrealistic image from from another planet, except for the city lights and the ship on the horizon. The time exposure of 20+ seconds has produced a genuinely memorable photograph. Warm regards,

Hi Alvin,
Silky smooth for sure...neat sand "carvings" there in the foreground. Nice colors and good idea to include that big freighter with lights showing in the distance. Well done and TFS. Gerald

What a delight, no grandiose subject like the Rockies or Vancouver highrises, so the result has a deeper impression, the sharp fg makes a fine contrast against the blurred motion of the ocean, the presence of the tanker was also very fortunate.

Hi Alvin
Good light management in low light level conditions, with superb colour, sharpness, & framing. I like the reflected skylight, in the fg channel on the beach. Tfs!

Good Evening Alvin. Nice to see more creative coastline captures from your collection. I have yet to explore the element of long exposures with moving water. Being close to the water yourself gives you ample opportunity to enjoy settings like this. Nice to see those huge distant ships anchored and frozen in the exposure. Call it the twilight zone?...excellent results Alvin.. Keep up the good work!

Hi Alvin,
I like these long exposure shots, even though they require a good screen to be fully enjoyed and right now I don't have one. What I prefer in this one is the water path feeding the sea, a vertical frame with closer center crop would be interesting as well I think.
Have a nice day jY

Hi Alvin,
Looks like a silk blanket, untouched, thanks to the 20 seconds exposure. A nice serene effect, but also great light spreading all over it. The two rocks add nice depth and the orange/red lights in the distance is giving a colourful touch to it...i like it a lot, very good work.

hi Alvin,
a nice image, the light and colors are really nice.
however, I guess a tighter framing on the rock and the graphism on the sand could have been even better, don't you think?

Hi Alvin
Great DOF. The FG has an ineresting pattern that leads the eye to the rocks and eventually to the horizon. The sliver of setting sun nicely balances the lights of West Van.
Well done.

I like the trickle of water going through the sand. This photo has a good distinct foreground, midground, and background. The lights from the two ships on the horizon balance with the lights from the city on the right. There is a hint of yellow in the sky that I wish wasn't there. I would like to see this photo with only shades of blue. The smooth appearance of the water is nice.

Ryan

Alvin,
I really love the way you've used water pattern in the sand on this one.
To me, the pattern reads like a symbol, like a drawing from an ancient culture. Yet, across this bay we see the lights and ships of the modern world.
A fantastic image. One of your best I think.

Hi Alvin,
The long exposure gave a smooth sea and sand. The point of view leads our eyes towards the mountains. The design in the sand and the rocks in the foreground are an asset to the composition. The colors are sending a cool feeling. have a nice day.

Oh, I love this dark, almost no light landscape shots so much. I'm a real sucker for such feast. The composition here with that little detail in the sand - water flowing through gives an additional element of leading into the scene and providing a sense of perfect depthness.

You have beautiful shots Alvin, another excellent shot in a long exposure.
Now i'm tempted to buy a wide angle lens.

It's a very uniform exposure considering the great variations of light intensity that must have been present. Outstanding PP, then, apparently. I like your framing in the sand to interrupt the smooth flow of the scene with the little pattern in the sand. Nice placement of the rocks, too. Regards, Ken.

Hi Alvin,
As soon as I saw this one it drew me right in. Those small rivulets of water in the foreground are spectacular and I love the reflected twilight tones. I would have loved to have seen a few intimate landscapes composed of only the rivulets and rocks. From reading your note to Ryan it sounds like you took some closer up but I did a quick workshop to show the sort of thing I was picturing. A simple square crop of this image to exclude the ships would be great as well.
Wonderful eye!
