Photographer's Note

Coming down off a hillwalk in the Lammermuir Hills, with the East Lothian Walking Festival, we noticed that there were lots of new born lambs in a field near the farm.

One with a new born lamb looked a bit odd and on closer inspection we realised that a twin lamb was in the process of being born. It's mother seemed to be ignoring the first one, but then turned round and started licking it. The umbilical chord from the first lamb was still dangling.

Though a usual occurrence for sheep farmers, I have been going into the hills and countryside for years and this was a first for me.
