Photographer's Note

Michigan City East Pier Light was constructed in 1904. The 1858 Michigan City Lighthouse served as the main beacon for the harbor, until 1894, when the Lighthouse Board recommended that a fog signal building was required. In 1900, Congress granted the funds, and the new light was finally built in 1904, after the pier's extension was completed.

"The East Pier light was constructed to take the place of the older Michigan City Light on shore. Legend has it that during the 1920s Al Capone would frequently drive by in his speedboat on his way to his house in Long Beach, going by water to avoid being ambushed by rivals."
