Evening Canyon

Spearfish Canyon
The Black Hills
South Dakota

The evening of the same day as my last post found me with my family in my other favorite natural place in the Black Hills .. Spearfish Canyon.

This is the view from the Latchstring Inn .. The Inn has a wonderful little restaurant and also serves as the trail head to the two best waterfalls in the Black Hills .. Spearfish Falls sits on a 3/4 mile loop trail down into the canyon .. Roughlock Falls sits a mile to the west accessible by a road or a wonderful little trail. We finished our day by walking to both falls and then back to the Inn for a nice dinner. See the Black Hills theme that is hopefully to the left for shots of the falls.

Hi John,
Wonderful clear lighting highlights the golden tones of these impressive cliffs that contrast nicely with the lush green vegeatation at the same time that they are complimented by the lovely pale blue summer sky.

Hallo John!
What a sight! This gorgeous light emphasizes the the beauty of these "pastel" rocks in a wonderful way. One already can feel the coming night between the trees in the lower part...a wonderful atmospheric scenery.

You play wonderful with light on the rocks hillside , this gives a wonderful effect.
Splendid composition John, through the green foreground the rocks in middle and the nice sky.

Hi John,
An apparently simple POV, but certainly wonderful. It's a gorgeous place and I guess that that light of almost sunset on the cliffs makes the photo even more beautiful. I am amazed with the clarity of the shadowed forested slope.
I like it a lot.

Sometimes I look at your pictures, specially these South Dakota's and all of a sudden I see something I had long forgotten, but... not completely! I know this spot...

Hello John,
nice composition with the diagonally placement of the rock of Spearfish Canyon to predominate in the scene.But co-essential impressive is the afternoon light that falls from the left.The contrasted colours are superb as the tones of the green.Informative your note too.

You had a nice view from the Inn. Lovely place with beautiful rocks and the lot of poplars (it looks) and pine trees. I like the warm lights on the rock and the clouds on the pale blue sky.

A picture where light plays such an important role. Excellent layers of colours, the green, the brown & then the blue. The diagonal split of the image is also excellent.I feel a narrower aperture would have given you more sharpness, especially on the trees.
