When MIT Got Hacked

This is a photo from inside Stata Center, part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It shows two famous so-called hacks that were carried out by students in the past and are now displayed at Stata Center. These hacks are practical jokes and pranks meant to show the students’ cleverness and technical abilities. Student hacks have become an important part of MIT’s history and tradition.

The Nerd Crossing sign is a hack from 1987, when it was placed at a busy crossing at 77 Massachusetts Avenue. The Police Cruiser hack is from 1994. The car was painted as an MIT Campus Police Car and it appeared on top of the Great Dome of Building 10 at the MIT campus. I added two photos to the WS, one with the Great Dome itself and one with the sign inside Stata Center explaining about the hack with a picture of the police car on top of the dome.
