Photographer's Note

This is the lesser known side of the State of New Jersey in the United States. Contrary to the TV's portrayal of this state it is not all Jersey Shore and Real Housewives :) This area is a shot from the Franklin Parker Preserve, which is part of an extensive Conservation effort that spans the entire state. This particular section showcases the Pine Barrens of Chatsworth. The South Jersey Pine Barren area is well known for it's cranberry and blueberry crops. This part of the preserve was donated by a cranberry farmer, and I believe for every 1 acre of cranberry bogs there must be 10 acres of pines... so while this section is all old cranberry bogs, there are acres and acres of untouched pine barrens. The preserve takes full advantage of the old bog areas as preserving the wetland sections of pines, they are allowing the bogs to grow and do their own thing. There is another section that is old blueberry fields, which is a perfect habitat for snakes of the area. The building in the distance is an old pump building from the bogs, the preserve uses them and is converting them to observation posts so that visitors can get a raised view of the wetlands and the many species that call this area home but would be discouraged from enjoying it when it was active farm land :) I really just love the blue skies and clouds and all the green that most people don't think of when they think of New Jersey!
