Photographer's Note

The holiday season has begun, so here’s a photo taken in one of the most iconic holiday spots in NYC: Rockefeller Center.

The ice skating rink in Rockefeller Center is the most visited rink in the city. It’s open annually between October and April, and year round the golden statue of Prometheus watches the activity taking place. Prometheus was the God who brought fire to man. So here we have an interesting combination of "fire and ice". Thankfully the flame he’s holding doesn’t seem strong enough to melt the rink. :-)

Rockefeller Center was built during the difficult years of the Great Depression. Between 1930 and 1939 fourteen Art Deco buildings were erected, and another four were added in the 1960's and 70's.

With great architecture, artwork, an underground shopping and dining concourse, and, of course, the ice skating rink, this is one of the most visited spots in midtown Manhattan.

Just behind Prometheus stands the giant Christmas tree. He doesn’t get a view of the tree, but he does get to enjoy plenty of skating.

One of my earliest photos here on TE was another shot of Prometheus and the ice skating rink. Twelve years later I decided to post another view. :-)
